A video installation made for Sonic Vigil VII improvised music and sound art festival in Cork, Ireland on 23-24th November 2012. The installation was hosted at The Guesthouse, the warmth and feeding outpost of the main festival held down the lane at St. Anne's Church, home of the famous Shandon Bells. Rotational Intersection was created in, for, and by Cork. Making zither recordings in a house in Turner's Cross, throughout the morning and afternoon I wandered the city looking for interesting acoustic spaces to play the recordings in through a small battery powered amplifier. Printed to these sounds in the subsequent recordings made in the different spaces are the ambiances, backround noise and occasional snippets of conversation and music. My journey took me from Church of Christ the King in Turner's Cross, a small outdoor carpark, sheltering under an archway in the rain, walking down South Mall, Oliver Plunket St., through the English Market, Triskel Christchurch, the green bridge crossing from the Opera House up to Shandon, and finally St. Anne's Church in Shandon, during set up. The video was recorded at the same time as the audio recordings using a rotating technique. Thanks to Mick O'Shea, Irene Murphy and Danny McCarthy for inviting me to take part in the festival. Sonic Vigil is gold, if you get a chance go next year!

The Artichoke is a small 8 stringed zither with two bridges per string, and 3 pickups. The bridge dividing the long part of the string is curved to allow use of a bow, and the string segment between tuning pin and bridge can be used to bend the pitch by applying pressure. This zither is made with a sound making playing approach in mind rather than a tuneful one. More musical zithers coming very soon.

First batch of my variation on the ancient kalimba instrument. This design doubles the amount of notes from each tine by bending the metal strip around a piece of metal tube, resulting in a 2 voice instrument, bass and treble (accompaniment and melody). Get in touch if you're interested in buying one of these or similar. Electric versions coming soon.

First of my polygon zither range, this is a five-sided acoustic zither with 8 strings divided by 3 bridges, making 16 pitches. I'm proud with the result; the strings from zither pin to middle bridge sound like other zithers I've built while the strings from middle bridge to anchor have an ethereal, metallic twang sound. Custom zithers are available on request - get in touch over email at edjdevane /at\ gmail /dot\ com and I'll see what I can do.

A small acoustic zither made from white oak, lime wood and birch ply. Nine strings and a sweet tone, this instrument can be played with fingers, picks, or as I demonstrate in the video, by doubling the amount of notes with a third bridge and hitting the strings with sticks (I used a small ball peen hammer and chopsticks as they were at hand, but anything that size would do). Of course other playing methods could be invented... I'm selling these instruments at a fair price so if you're interested in getting something unique looking and sounding get in touch by emailing me at edjdevane /at\ gmail /dot\ com
