        A representative of the French government came all the way to Dallas City Hall to pin the that country's Legion of Honor medal on seven North Texas veterans who fought on the beaches of Normandy in June of 1944. It is the highest decoration offered by France, and is awarded as a thank you for the sacrifices soldiers made to keep the world free.

          Donald Mates of the Third Marine Division saw some of the greatest action in the Pacific Theater of World War II at the Battle of Iwo Jima. After seeing combat in Guam, Mates was sent to Iwo Jima with the Fourth Platoon, tasked with locating the dangerous Japanese spigot mortars. At age 89, Mates reflects on his experience in one of the most grueling battles of the Second World War.

City officials were on hand along with Congresswoman Judy Chu and Assemblymember Ed Chau. Eleven veterans were honored for their heroic service to our country.                     Lt. Col. Edward Saylor was in Plane 15 of the famed Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942. He talks about his experiences leading up to the raid, the raid itself, and the time he spent on a small island off the coast of China, hiding from Japanese soldiers. Saylor and his crew eventually made it to the Chinese main land before returning home. This film was created in his honor following his passing on January 28, 2015. This interview, conducted in November 2014, is likely to be the last he has done.
