Kakuma Rocks is a song recorded by local artists at the Kakuma Refugee Camp, the 'Kakuma All Stars.' The song was recorded in Kakuma in collaboration with Emmanuel Jal and it is a song that preaches peace. The song is in-line with the peace efforts that the World Refugee Day advocates and we are happy as the FilmAid team to launch it on this day.

I had the pleasure of shooting a music video for the World Refugee Day (WRD) with the FIlmAid team at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. I shot the 'behind the scenes' using my FujiFilm Finepix SL310 camera and BB Z10 phone. I am still learning how to edit, and also forgive my camera skills in certain sections. Enjoy and drop me your comments on http://bdettesphotography.blogspot.com/

Sunday June 20, it was World Refugee Day. To remember people of the sad situation millions of refugees live in we created an eye-catching stunt for the UN Refugee Agency. We transformed the main entrance of the national train station in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg into a miniature refugee camp. 3,000 blue cards symbolized the "famous" blue tents. The main objective was to make people aware about the millions of refugees worldwide. By taking home this simple card or by becoming member of the UNHCR Facebook group, people showed they had a small thought left for all those refugees whose only home is a little blue tent. Video directed and edited by François Chandelle. Original Music : Ann Arbor "People Don't Know". www.myspace.com/annarbortheband

June 20, 2012 is World Refugee Day. Refugees are defined under international law as being outside their home country and having a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. Since 1980, 1.8 million refugees have been invited to live in the United States - typically between 40,000 to 75,000 each year. From 2008-10, the U.S. Department of State recorded the resettlement of over 18,000 adolescent refugee girls. Once resettled, girls face overwhelming responsibilities and social isolation compared with boys. Poverty, language, and their responsibilities at home make it extremely difficult to learn English, succeed in school, and help their families navigate life in the U.S. GirlForward is a non-profit organization in Chicago dedicated to empowering adolescent refugee girls to reach their full potential. Here are the stories of Khina, Saja, Sarah, and Domi - four girls who have participated in GirlForward's programs. To learn more, visit girlforward.org or Facebook.com/GirlForward
