In 1957, the City of New Haven, Connecticut, obliterated the Oak Street neighborhood to make way for a highway that was intended to connect the city to the surrounding suburbs. The initiative ended up dividing the community, displacing over 850 households and destroying 350 buildings. The highway, originally named the Oak Street Connector, remains incomplete to this day. The dilapidated Oak Street neighborhood, while considered a slum and a "hard core of cancer" by city planners and administrators, was nonetheless a vibrant community and an important place where immigrants could get a foothold in the United States. This virtual percussion installation is a tribute to the Oak Street neighborhood and was created for Sebastian Ruth's Music and Service course at the Yale School of Music.
