Connect with Maths Pulsars in the Mathematics Classroom presented by Stephen Broderick, a Maths Science teacher at St Ursula’s College Toowoomba. He spent a week working with staff in Sydney at the National Telescope Facility in Sydney to start developing education modules that use CSIRO astronomical data. This was part of a teacher scholarship for CSIRO’s PULSE@Parkes education program. The project is designed to engage students in scientific projects that will give them a positive attitude towards science and mathematics, and appreciation of how maths is applied in the real world. PULSE@Parkes allows students to directly control Parkes radio telescope over the Internet and use it to do real science. It is the only program of its kind in the world. Almost 1,000 students have been through the program, which has been run from as far afield as Wales and the Netherlands.

Creating Mathematical Opportunities in the Early Years Presenter, Dr Tracey Muir, for Connect with Maths Early Years Learning in Mathematics community As teachers, we are constantly looking for ways in which we can provide students with mathematical opportunities to engage in purposeful and authentic learning experiences. On a daily basis we need to select teaching content and approaches that will stimulate our children through creating contexts that are meaningful and appropriate. This requires a level of knowledge that extends beyond content, to pedagogy and learning styles. As early childhood educators, we can also benefit from an understanding of how the foundational ideas in mathematics form the basis for key mathematical concepts that are developed throughout a child’s school. In this webinar, Tracey will be discussing the incorporation of mathematical opportunities into our early childhood practices and considering the influence of different forms of teacher knowledge on enacting these opportunities.

What's happened to temperatures over the last century, and how do we know? Determining how temperatures, globally and in Australia, have changed over the last century may seem like a fairly straightforward matter. In this webinar, Blair will discuss the challenges in knowing exactly what has happened, including what data do (and do not) exist, how accessible they are, and what we do to take into account factors such as site moves and instrument changes over many years to make sure that the data are as consistent as possible. Blair Trewin is a senior climatologist with the Bureau of Meteorology in Melbourne. He has been the lead scientist in the development of a number of long-term data sets used for monitoring climate in Australia, including the main Australian long-term temperature data set. This resource can be used effectively using real data for real world issues to learn the importance of statistics and data to inform how we live.

The Connect with Maths~ Maths in Action community launch recorded on Monday July 7, 2014 was opened by Will Morony, AAMT CEO. The webinar is presented by Peter Galbraith and Vince Geiger. Thank you again to Peter and Vince for the informative session explaining the key concepts of the Mathematical Applications and Modelling community resource. “Exploring Real World Problems" Peter Galbraith and Vince Geiger focus this session on using mathematics to explore real world problems. The aims and objectives of the Maths in Action community are discussed, including links to the numeracy agenda. Tasks using modelling and numeracy approaches then follow, with the use of technologies incorporated. Commonalities and differences between approaches to modelling and numeracy instruction will be explored. Implications for practice and connections to the Australian Curriculum will also be considered – including the identification of situations which support applications and modelling approaches.
