"Almost There means not getting what you set out for." For many, Peter Anton’s house embodies an end-of-life nightmare: the utility companies long ago shut off the heat and electricity, the floorboards are rotting, and the detritus of a chaotic life is precariously stacked to the ceiling. But for the filmmakers Dan Rybicky and Aaron Wickenden, Anton’s home is a treasure trove, a startling collection of unseen and fascinating paintings, drawings, and notebooks, not to mention Anton himself, a character worthy of his own reality TV show. Though aging, infirm, cranky, and solitary, Anton also is funny and utterly resilient. Rybicky and Wickenden’s remarkable journey follows a gifted artist through startling twists and turns. By its quietly satisfying ending, Almost There has provided enough human drama for a season of soap operas, plus insights into mental illness, aging in America, and the redemptive power of art. Our Kickstarter campaign (ends Aug. 8 at 11:59pm): kck.st/1k5vdsZ On July 26th, 2014, Almost There had a sneak preview screening at Pierogi Fest-- where directors Dan Rybicky and Aaron Wickenden had first met Peter Anton 8 years before. Here is Part III of a special series of short videos from that special screening: We'd like to introduce you to Dan McKern - one of the kindest and coolest guys we've ever met. Dan plays an important part in Peter's life and Almost There. ------------ Almost There tells the story of Peter Anton, an elderly "outsider" artist living in at-risk conditions who befriends two filmmakers and causes controversy at his first major exhibition. Peter’s work, which can be best described as "outsider" art (art created outside the cultural mainstream) was made in – and, at times, physically on - his current/childhood home in Northwest Indiana. But with his immediate family now dead, his house has fallen into squalor and his health is failing. What happens when Peter befriends us and we try to help him tell his story and get his work shown publicly for the first time forms the dramatic center of the film. Almost There delves into Peter’s controversial art exhibit and documents the tumultuous transition he must make out of his childhood home. Along the way, the directors meet people in Peter's community who like them are compelled to help this charismatic yet curmudgeonly character survive, while asking: Why do they do it? What responsibilities do we have to those in need, and where should boundaries be drawn?
