http://crosstownarts.org/between-the-eyes- Crosstown Arts is pleased to present Between the Eyes, a group show about contemporary abstract painting and how we see it. Just as the relationships of pitch and duration can express emotion in music, the formal relationships of hue, value, shape, and placement can collect to create meaning in abstract painting. Featuring the work of six painters exploring distinct modes of abstraction, the exhibition examines the way each artist uses deliberate choices to engage us in the experience of looking. Formal cues such as gesture, color and the use of found objects prompt us to recognize patterns and attribute meaning to certain behaviors. Physicality contends with the pictorial as we both decipher and project meaning into the space of abstract forms. The exhibition is curated by Laurel Sucsy and features work by New York-based artists Marina Adams, Rob de Oude, and Joe Fyfe; LA-based artist Iva Gueorguieva; Philadelphia-based artist Rubens Ghenov; and Laurel Sucsy of Memphis. James Kalm met Yevgeniya Baras several years ago through her association with the Bushwick curatorial project Regina Rex. He then bumped into the artist through her migratory gallery Bull and Ram. While your correspondent is always impressed with artists who recognize the importance of working with and promoting their arts community, it's an added bonus when these individuals turn out to be talented artists in their own right. Yevgeniya Baras combines the rugged, physicality of found objects with an almost shamanistic reverence for their evocative potential. By melding the factual with a sophisticated sense of abstraction and its legacy, the artist teases out emotional responses that are embedded in the humble substance of simple images and day to day things.

For Marisa Purcell, paint acts as a medium between the empirical world of knowing and a release into the unknown. As she works, her method stretches paint’s physical qualities by combining thinly veiled layers of colour, allowing paint to pool and dry slowly. Through this she builds strange relationships of shape and scale while marking graphic rhythms at varying speeds and densities, risking awkward crises that stand as metaphors for everyday life.
