      • Nix the resolution habit - part 1

New Year’s resolutions. Goals. To Do lists. Ugh! Each year we hear the same things – and each year we either make an attempt at resolutions (only to give up on them within the first few weeks) or we just blow off the idea altogether. I used to make them every year. I’d get super detailed about every area of my life – relationships, finances, work, family, free time, health, etc. It used up a lot of time and energy and I have to say, was very challenging for me to keep up. I didn’t feel excited after a while (like a few days). I felt like I was carrying a burden. Not a real fun way to enter into a new year, but it was all I knew. You, too? Typically, we make a list of things we want in our life and goals to achieve. Then at the end of the year, when we’re exhausted from the holidays, we review this list . What do we focus on? All the things we didn’t get done and didn’t receive. Then we rush to make a new list because we think there’s some rule out there that says we need to have our resolutions done by January 1. Sounds like a party to me. Well, let’s try something different this year. Are you with me? In order to really appreciate the gifts we’ve received, we need to acknowledge them. To make new goals, we need to know the old ones we achieved, right? Wouldn’t we be better off taking some time (dare I say the entire month of January!) to reflect on what our past year looked and felt like, see what fit and what didn’t and devise a new list of what we’d like to create? I say, yes we would. So here’s part one of this process: 1. Acknowledge what we accomplished, what made us proud of ourselves. As simple as this sounds, for some of us, it’s much easier to see what we didn’t do, get, or have. Lack is easier to focus on. I invite you to stretch your pride muscle and try this exercise: Write down a list of things that you did get, do and enjoy. This is not the time to be stingy! What makes you proud of you? Did you get a promotion that you worked super hard for? Did you lose 10 lbs.? (Don’t care if your goal was 20). Did you learn a new dance or take yoga for the first time? Did you get all your tax info. organized for the first time? Were you really present at each holiday gathering and noticed how much more you enjoyed them? Whatever you’ve accomplished I want you to write down. To make this super easy for you, I’ve included a downloadable list so there’s no excuses! It’s called My Fabulously Large List and I’ve left plenty of room for you to document all the fantabulous stuff you did in 2012! (Download at http://www.fillyourcupcoach.com/blog) Make sure you remember to include any behavior changes or feeling shifts that you consciously worked on. These are just as important (if not more) than the goals you achieved! So there you have part 1 of this 2 part process. Make sure you’re subscribed to my ezine, so you’ll get part 2 in your inbox! And when you’re working on this oh-so fabulous list of yours, make sure you share it! Leave a comment here, or hop on over to my Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/fillyourcupcoach) or Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/BarbChurchill) pages and let me know just how awesome your 2012 was! I know how wonderful you are – and I can’t wait to hear that you realize it, too!
