MATAERIAL is the result of the collaborative research between Petr Novikov, Saša Jokić from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and Joris Laarman Studio. IAAC tutors representing Open Thesis Fabrication Program provided their advice and professional expertise. During the course of the research we developed a brand new digital fabrication method and a working prototype that can open a door to a number of practical applications. The method that we call Anti·gravity Object Modeling has a Patent-Pending status. www.mataerial.com Soundtrack: Mémoire - La Mer http://soundcloud.com/memoiremusic

A research project Stone Spray done by Anna Kulik, Inder Shergill and Petr Novikov under the supervision of Marta Male-Alemany, Jordi Portell and Miquel Lloveras in the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia in the year 2012. The goal of the project was to research the field of additive manufacturing in architecture and to propose a new eco-friendly, efficient and interesting system to print architecture in 3d. As a result a robot and series of samples were created. Also a book describing the project was published. The group would like to additionally thank Santiago Martin, Guillem Comprodon and Luis Fraguada for their help in this project. The Hyphae Lamp is a new series of algorithmically generated lighting designs by Nervous System. Each lamp is individually grown through a process based on leaf vein formation. No two lamps are alike. Each lamp casts a unique pattern of branching shadows on the wall and ceiling, creating an ethereal and organic atmosphere. The lamps are 3D-printed to order in nylon and illuminated with eco-friendly LED lights. The first 10 lamps in the series will be available for purchase on July 11th. more information at http://n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com/blog/?p=1701 animation by Nervous System music by Scion Eidolon

The customer can select these new spectacles during a consulting interview and they are fitted to his head as bespoke eyewear. The milled nose brigde made of cork is made to measure with a 3D-scan of the customers nose. The cork ensures that the glasses aren't sliding down the nose.

Check out http://baecher.info/fab_char_sig12.html for more details. Articulated deformable characters are widespread in computer animation. Unfortunately, we lack methods for their automatic fabrication using modern additive manufacturing (AM) technologies. We propose a method that takes a skinned mesh as input, then estimates a fabricatable single-material model that approximates the 3D kinematics of the corresponding virtual articulated character in a piecewise linear manner. We first extract a set of potential joint locations. From this set, together with optional, user-specified range constraints, we then estimate mechanical friction joints that satisfy inter-joint non-penetration and other fabrication constraints. To avoid brittle joint designs, we place joint centers on an approximate medial axis representation of the input geometry, and maximize each joint's minimal cross-sectional area. We provide several demonstrations, manufactured as single, assembled pieces using 3D printers. Authors: M. Bächer, B. Bickel, D. L. James, H. Pfister
