Study 2 of 13 on Jeremiah “Remember the good old days? we probably remember something. But if you look at it objectively…we probably add more good than what was actually there. King Solomon said it best “There is nothing new under the sun.” That doesn’t mean we can’t do good. It just means that the same old sin keeps coming back and until we choose not to give in to that sin…God’s chosen will continue to be cyclical in behavior. ..period of better…period of bad…rinse and repeat. But when we choose to be truthful…in leadership and worship…when we choose to give up power for grace and forgiveness…we stand not only tall…but true…and just. Remember the good old days. Were they just?”—Falvo Fowler Read for This Week’s Study: Judg. 2:1–15; 1 Kings 12:26– 31; 2 Chron. 33:9, 10; Jer. 2:1–28; 5:2, 3. Memory Text: “ ‘ “Israel was holiness to the Lord, the first fruits of His increase. All that devour him will offend; disaster will come upon them,” says the Lord’ ” (Jeremiah 2:3, NKJV). 1. Why do people hold on to beliefs even when they know they are wrong? 2. What is surrogate religion? In what ways does it exist today? 3. 1 Kings 12:26-31 How did a grab for power split God’s people? 4. What significance, if any, does Judges 2:10 have for us today? 5. How spiritual was the “peace” of the united monarchy? (you might have to explain the united monarchy) 6. Does strong church leadership mean strong spiritual nurturing? What defines strong church leadership? What can local church members do to nurture that? 7. How do we transmit good spiritual/Biblical values to the next generation? 8. Why do strong Biblical leadership standards matter to our personal and corporate lives? 9. Based on Jeremiah 2:8, what similarities do we see today? 10. In what terrible ways were the people self-deceived in regard to their true spiritual condition (Jeremiah 2: 23, 24) 11. What examples of spiritual vanity do you see around you? How can that be healed? 12. How did the aversion to change hurt God’s chosen? Jeremiah 25: 8-12 13. With all the Facebook posts, calls for revival, and stories of prayer warriors occurring every day, how different are we from the people in Jeremiah 5:2,3?
