1. Exploring El Chalten - Trekking Capital of Argentina

Wonderful skies in the morning if conditions are right although it only lasts for a few minutes! We walked to the entrance to the national park and hiked for 30 minutes up the hill overlooking El Chalten with the glaciers in the background. On the way back into town, we stopped at the Welcome sign for the town where we were going to get a photo taken – there was a young lady (about 20 or so) taking a picture of her miniature doll on the sign – we were taken aback for a minute or so. Initially I figured her to be in her early teens, but no, when I asked her if she would like me to take a photo of both of them and she spoke with me it was evident she was quite a bit older than 15… The doll she was carrying around was about six inches high… Dinner at Maffia's – an Italian restaurant with wonderful food. El Chalten is a trekker’s community of 1500 which was built in the middle of the national park in 1985 - an uninspiring main street reminiscent of Talkeetna, Alaska; hikers outfitted with backpacks, a dozen hostels, a few hotels and small shops.

Mexico: Central Mexico, San Miguel to Oaxaca. Total so far: 7,120 miles (11,459 km) After leaving San Miguel we ride north of Mexico city to avoid the chaos, and round to Teotihuacan. Here is a Pre-Columbian city made up mainly today of huge pyramids. These were stunning to visit, especially as a Mexican TV station gave me a ride in a balloon in exchange for an interview. Moving on, the next stage was to ride to Puebla and visit my fellow cyclists Paola and Reto. First though there was an enormous 12,104ft pass to cross by the wonderful Popocatépetl Volcano. Taking two days of pushing to get to the top, and with a header on the way down, it was a tough couple of days. The bruised ribs were well worth it though in exchange for seeing my first live volcano. A wonderful weeks rest was had with Paola, Reto, Alexys and Valerie. Between drinking beer we even managed to get ourselves into Mexico city. Here we came across the filming of the new James Bond film "Spectre". So if you look closely, probably with a magnifying glass you may see five scruffy cyclists in the crowd. Next stop was Oaxaca. On the way a huge pass is crossed. In the heat and humidity, it proves to be a real challenge and is without doubt the hardest couple of days on the tour. Another generous invitation, this time from Paola's Aunt and Uncle had us staying in our own house while in the city. They also treat us to a day trip out to the Hierve el Agua. These are calcified pools and waterfalls up in the mountains. Boy was it lovely to have a swim after all the hot weather I have been cycling through.

Surf the Greats is an adventure travel and lifestyle brand founded right here in Toronto. Surf the Greats was born from our passion for adventure, exploration, and the power of nature. It is the emergence of a northern surf culture founded in travel, community building, conservation, and stewardship. We are the winds of change, and the spirit of adventure; we are Surf the Greats. Our goal is to build a local and global community by connecting people through surfing. As the world around us grows in complexity, building a strong relationship with people and our natural environment is more important than ever. We strive to bring diverse, yet like-minded, people together over shared passions. The outpouring of support for our initiatives has been overwhelming and we are truly grateful. This year, we are embarking on our most ambitious project to date. Moving beyond our own backyard, we are launching Surf the Greats Travel. Inspired by the success of our local trips and experiences; we are expending our vision internationally. We want to share the opportunity to travel the world from a surfer’s perspective. We strive to build on the values and inspiration we have experienced in our lives through surfing, community, and travel. Our goal is to reconnect people with life’s fundamentals and expand their horizons in the world around them. Such an ambitious goal comes with challenges; all great things do. We invite you to view our crowdfunding campaign at www.surfthegreats.org and consider lending your support and investing in this initiative. Mahalo!

I just absolutely loved staying at the Olifants Camp during our visit last December to Kruger National Park, South Africa. We stayed in this hut at the edge of camp above the river. It was so nice to enjoy a glass of wine and watch the elephants and hippos down below!
