          The $10 Campaign, a group of healthcare advocates and home health organizations, is working to mobilize community attendants for a base pay rate of $10 per hour. Community attendants are the key to making cost-effective community services successful for tens of thousands of individuals with disabilities and seniors in Texas. However, our state is one of the worst in the country when it comes to supporting them, paying a base wage of $7.86 per hour with no benefits. While Gov. Abbott called for a 5% (or .39¢) attendant wage increase in his State of the State address earlier this year, the legislature has yet to follow suit. Current House and Senate versions of the budget provide for a 14¢ and 11¢ raise, respectively. The $10 Campaign maintains that neither figure is adequate for Texas to maintain a strong direct care workforce. To address this issue, the $10 Campaign will hold a Rally on the North Steps of the Capitol on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. Following the Rally, attendees will deliver petitions with over 3,000 signatures from across the state in support of wage raise to $10 per hour to Gov. Abbott and legislative leaders. The $10 Campaign organizers will demonstrate with community attendants and their care-recipients from around the state. Representative John Zerwas (HD-28) will join the rally to speak to the importance of a well-supported attendant workforce. About the $10 Campaign The $10 Campaign supports higher wages and higher Medicaid reimbursements for community-based personal care attendants in all programs that pay a base wage of under $10 per hour. Organizers are ADAPT of Texas, the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities (CTD), H.A.N.D. and the Central Texas Home Care Coalition, Methodist Ministries, the National Association of Social Workers Texas Chapter, the Personal Attendant Coalition of Texas (PACT), the Texas Association of Centers for Independent Living (TACIL), and Texas Parent to Parent.             The primary goal of the Ombudsman Program is to assure quality care with respect and dignity for all consumers of long-term care services. In general, ombudsmen are alerted to, investigate and resolve concerns related to the health, safety, welfare and rights of the target population. This includes persons who live in nursing homes and personal care homes as well as those who utilize adult day services, domiciliary care and community-based care programs. If an older adult or his/her loved one is having trouble getting concerns related to their quality of care addressed, the ombudsman will help them to resolve these problems.
