                    • Planet Islam - Ep 3

                      from Phil Rees Added

We Shall Overcome During the civil rights movement in the 1960s, the chorus of 'We Shall Overcome' was heard in churches up and down America. Now amongst poor urban blacks, Islam is fast becoming the new voice of black power. In 1997, there were more than two million African-American Muslims. Their numbers doubled in the previous decade. It's a phenomenon that has gone largely unreported and unseen. The mainstream media in America has focused on Louis Farrakhan, the leader of a small secretive sect called the Nation of Islam. Phil Rees' film shows that Farrakhan is not considered a Muslim by most in the faith, but instead believes that white men are the devil and that God is planning to drop bombs on America. Gerard Gilbert wrote in the Independent on Sunday (2.8.97) “Phil Rees’ forceful film looks at how Khaled Kelkal, the young Lyonnais bombing suspect shot dead by the police, has become a martyr among young French Muslims.” He went on to write: (9.8.97) “I do hope that Planet Islam is not going out unwatched and unloved. It is a truly excellent series – enlightening and with impressive access to it’s subjects. Foreign affairs journalism at its best”. According to the Daily Telegraph’s Cristina Odone, it was ‘timely and thoughtful…a troubling view of a country divided.” The Sunday Times A.A. Gil wrote: (24.8.97) ‘the series has been exceptionally fine and had the added bonus of not just telling the viewer something he wanted to know but something that he really ought to know ….and should be required viewing for every chief constable in the country.” Christopher Dunkley in the Financial Times (2.8.97) describes it as an “excellent series”. “It is not mere chance…that the series producer is Phil Rees. He has specialised for years in making programmes on this subject, including the outstanding documentary “Algeria’s Hidden War.” Presenter: William Shawcross Asst. Producer: Rollie Hudson Photography: Fred Scott Picture Editor: Robert Brown Executive Producer: George Carey Produced and Directed by Phil Rees
