This is a film about memory loss in old age. The title of the film ‘Primum non forgetful’ explores part of our Hippocratic Oath when it comes to the medical approach to memory loss. Primum non nocere, as stated by Hippocrates, translates as: first, above all, do no harm. This film, Primum non forgetful, argues that we have lost sight of the range of reasons behind forgetfulness in age. This film is presented in two parts: the first part will explore the current drive and seemingly universal imperative to diagnose dementia early. Increasingly this determination is effectively translating into widespread cognitive screening of our elderly. Whilst it remains important to tackle the delayed diagnosis of dementia the film will close by suggesting potential harms of the urge to diagnose earlier and earlier. "Cats, hats and doormats are all that Roberta needs to be happy... but is happiness enough?" Roberta Allen, with her silver moon boots, is a familiar figure in the streets of Norwich. Living alone with her ever-growing collections and only her beloved Marbles for company, old age is finally taking its toll. Poor vision, memory loss and a vivid imagination offer Roberta a rich kaleidoscope of experiences. The discovery of a winning lottery ticket changes Roberta's life forever... but is it for better or worse? With sensitivity and flashes of humour, this film addresses some of the issues facing the elderly in the UK today. Marbles is my graduation film for my BA Film and Moving Image Production at Norwich University of the Arts.

This project is close to my heart as it’s about my parents and Dad’s beloved 1974 Valiant ute (although it's as much about them as it is about the ute). I had a ball shooting this over the Easter break of 2012. Although this film was fairly early in my film making days I had already worked out a few story telling techniques and I think Dad really enjoyed seeing how a little film slowly comes together. The films you make about those closest to you are the most important you'll ever make. It was all shot on a Canon 5dM2 with opening sequence shot late afternoon using a 90mm tilt shift lens with my wife expertly pulling focus. All the footage was shot in Maitland and Port Victoria SA. Thanks for watching, Randy. Soundtrack “Stars over the Prairie” by Angela Easterling angelaeasterling.com/ GEAR: Canon 5dm2, Wally Dolly from Picture Hire Australia, Rode Videomic, Zoom h4n, edited in FCPX All shot in available light with Canon 24mm 1.4, 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2 lenses. Randy Larcombe is a stills and motion photographer based in Adelaide South Australia. He is known for his non-scripted short films that observe the subtleties of the human condition. He give his subjects the space to tell their own stories then combines that with beautiful imagery. You can see other examples of his work at http://randylarcombe.com.au/films/
