Interview made by the Italian broadcasting television RAI, about my documentary movie "Land Grabbing or Land to Investors?" filmed between Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and EAU. Land grabbing or developing land? It is on this ambiguity that all exploitation of land is based. The film comes into being as a complement to the photo reportage by the director/photographer and focuses attention on how the massive investments in farming land aimed at promotion the policies of food e water security, actually endanger the rights and the basic resources of the populations who live there. Monocultures take the land away from the populations and cannot be considered development because they do not help the countries to reach self-sufficiency, but orient them towards export putting their food security at risk. Point-black questions and answers between investors and activists who contradict themselves, but the images of the film speak on their own. "Over the next 40 years the world’s population will increase by 34%. To feed everybody a 70% increase in agricultural production will be necessary”. * *Committee on World Food Security, at FAO, October 2010. It had not been long since the bread revolts and the sudden increases of rice and grain prices which pushed the producing countries to decelerate or block all exportations, leaving many countries to search in a panic for new supply channels. It was clear that all this would trigger a global race for food stocks, and the Arab states, historically sensitive to food security policies, were the first to move, followed closely by astute investors looking for new profitable business ventures. Because Land Grabbing, if practised on a large scale, is in fact a business where the risk is practically zero. It is aided by funds set aside by the sovereign states who support companies investing overseas, favoured by the EU green policies for biofuel production, supported by funding from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and often, through specific insurance policies, it is even guaranteed against the stability risk of the country concerned. All this is discussed and decided in meetings and summits held a long way from the territory which will be the object of the investment and even further from the people whose life and work is rooted in the land concerned. I started working on it in December 2010, with a temporary interruption during which I worked on the Arab revolts. The choice of Ethiopia as an example country for Land Grabbing was natural to me, as the country had benefited just months previously from food aid from the World Food Program and from the biggest humanitarian aid project in all Africa. A country where more than 6million people survive thanks to food aid actually exports agricultural products cultivated on the land leased to foreign investors. A paradox. Hence the objective of this project: to try to get people thinking about the fact that having a generous spread on our table, a bunch of fresh roses on our bedside table or being able to use green fuel is the result of very complex dynamics, often funded by the taxes we pay, all at the expense of the unknowing inhabitants of the third-world countries.

The countryside around my town: sounds, landscapes, people working. The title is from a popular folk song in which a father is convincing his daughter to marry a man because he has a small field and a cow. In the film there's a quote from Thoreau: "From the desperate city you go into the desperate country, and have to console yourself with the bravery of minks and muskrats. [...] But alert and healthy natures remember that the sun rose clear."

--------------------------------------------------- - What is TERRAXCHANGE? TERRXCHANGE is a Web Site meant for those who want to make available their own abandoned and waste agricultural lands giving the opportunity to any interested person to take care of these soils making them produce. TERRAXCHANGE is conceived for promoting the meeting of these two realities by creating a fruitful symbiotic relationship so to enable the production of vegetables on abandoned spaces. - Why TERRACHANGE? This idea has born with the essential aim of creating a protection net toward lands degraded and abandoned to their own faith. We want to point out that the carelessness of the territories.is one of the main causes of the fairly well known hydrogeological hazards which even more frequently occurs with disastrous consequences for the human society. TERRAXCHANGE are strongly convinced that there are no” unproductive” soils. Each private and available space represents a value that goes over his ground rent thus deserving protection and care . TERRAXCHANGE aims to find out a farmer to each of these agricultural spaces available.
