This documentary, produced by a small group of Indiana University Media Arts and Science students, delves into the ancient agricultural practices, on Paros, Greece, and how technology and tourism are changing the island farmers' approach to growing and raising food. The film highlights several small, local farmers, who struggle against the influx of foreign produce and meat, higher food production costs and lower overall demand, and how several local NGOs and the municipality of Paros are working together to save this important piece of the island's heritage.

In 2008 a food crisis hit the developing world. Many developing countries had grown accustomed to importing much of their staple foods, particularly rice from Asia. As the World Bank and others such as the World Food Programme asked for governmental donations to rise to the challenge of food poverty, the International Food Policy Research Institute suggested that it was time not just to feed people in the here and now, but to address the massive underinvestment in agriculture in the developing world. Sierra Leone is bottom of the UN Human Development Index, but it needn't be. According to ActionAid, Sierra Leonean farmers are only using 15% of the available 780,000 hectares of prime farmland. Everyone in Sierra Leone agrees that their land is some of the most fertile, and yet their farmers are unable to get beyond subsistence. Many rice farmers are also eating imported rice for part of the year. This documentary explores the life of one small farming community, and shows why farmers are thwarted in their attempts to grow enough to sell.

Pandemic H1N1 virus may be or may soon become endemic in large modern swine confinement facilities. Despite this, there is a paucity of influenza surveillance that is currently being conducted among swine populations. Watch Dr. Jeff Fox, Features Editor for Microbe Magazine interview Dr. Gregory Gray, University of Florida, Gainesville, about the importance of conducting influenza surveillance among pigs and workers in these facilities in hopes that we might quickly detect the emergence of novel influenza viruses. This video was recorded live on May 25, 2010, at the American Society for Microbiology's 110th General Meeting in San Diego, Ca.
