1. Autechre Gantz _Graf

Gantz Graf was a creation in a moment of psychedelic inspiration, an idea that took hold in a synaptic dreamworld of LSD, experimental electronic and classical music; this served as the nucleus of what would become ground breaking visual synchronicity of image and sonics. Commissioned by Autechre / Warp Records, conceived, designed and animated by Alex Rutterford, Gantz Graf is an abstract visual representation of the track geometrically corresponding to the dynamics and structural detail of the music. Rutterford explains the LSD induced journey which revealed the idea - "The original imagery I saw in my head….. I saw things that were hundreds of times more complex that were in the finished video. I would say I was 75% close to what I originally saw particularly in the last 30 seconds of Gantz Graf. 75% is a reasonable figure when you are trying to recreate a dream - you can describe a dream, but to try and replicate it becomes an almost impossible task. How could I ever possibly invite you into my mind?". Animated in four sections that invisibly fused with one another to form one single camera movement, each section of Gantz Graf was pieced together in chronological order. Six months, many evening hours and animation tests later, Gantz Graf was finally finished. More than a decade later and on reflection, Rutterford considered what could have been altered - "If I could have changed some elements, I would have redesigned the geometry, the shapes or made the video more mathematically abstract". www.alexrutterford.com Interview with Alex Rutterford with Nick Kilroy on the Warp Records website.

In a brave move for a car company, Kia have decided to let customer reviews sell their cars for them. They're putting independently verified customer reviews (good and bad) on their website for all to see. To bring this to life Joyrider's Alex Rutterford has animated, with the help of The Mill, a wall of computer keys that create the backdrop to Kia's new range of cars. The ad was created by Innocean Uk's creative directors John Crozier and Dom Sweeney.

Video made with "ganz graf live 1.0" a max for live patch ported from jitter to max for live. by vh over at maxforlive.com/library/device.php?id=133 The original patch was created by Masato TSUTSUI and can be found here http://adsr.jp/download/patch/index.php?page=2 under the patch name mai_planets_b The original Gantz Graf video was made by Alex Rutterford for the artist Autechre. I basically just made a beat in live and then had a midi instrument trigger the patch via those midi notes, and then put some miscellaneous midi effects on the clips to make them a little more chaotic, and put some audio effects on the master channel. You can rotate the imagery around in 3d and assign the different knobs for the ganz graf patch to a midi controller or change them manually to alter the look. Also the different attributes to the audio affect the distortion of the patch, so some tweaking may be needed. Also the frame rate doesn't look very smooth, it plays out of live at about 50 fps, and i captured it at 60, but the switch back to ntsc makes it look sort of stuttered, but i assure you in live it's smoooooth.
