Preview : January 12, 2013 @ Electric Lodge 4pm Tickets : http://laylameansnight.brownpapertickets.com/ Choreographer, Rosanna Gamson, develops new material in the ongoing development of LAYLA MEANS NIGHT, an evening-length interactive performance inspired by the Persian story of Shahrzad. We are also delighted to present original works-in-progress choreographed by individual dancers of the company. The ten dollar admission includes refreshments and conversation with the artists of Rosanna Gamson/World Wide following the showing. At this point in LAYLA MEANS NIGHT's development, Gamson investigates a variety of points of inspiration including the stories of Saint Ursula and the 11,000 virgins, and Gilles de Rais; as well as Islamic tile-work, Sufi calligraphy and quasicrystaline design. LAYLA MEANS NIGHT Serving up horrific melodrama as dance-theater divertissement, choreographer Rosanna Gamson and her company World Wide take on the tale of Scheherazade, the cunning bride from One Thousand and One Nights whose skills as a storyteller saved her from a murderous husband. Performed to a live score by master musicians Houman Pourmehdi and Pirayeh Pourafar, Layla Means Night employs hyped-up spectacle, 19th century projection techniques, enticements, misdirections and artful games of smoke-and-mirrors, to craft an intricate exploration of violence, complicity and our insatiable desire to be entertained. Made in part by supporters like YOU, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission & City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Deftly weaving together intense physical movement, spoken word, vocal music, and the "theater laboratory" ensemble techniques originated by Jerzy Grotowski, Rosanna Gamson stages a profusely evocative dance drama around the story of the tarpan--an extinct species of Eurasian wild horse that was genetically "reassembled" in the 1930s through back-breeding of domestic horses. The Los Angeles choreographer braids this allegory of regeneration with reflections on the history of her own Polish-Jewish ancestors, horse traders from Szczecin, and the fate of Polish Jewry. Tov takes its title from "Gamzu l'tovah" ("This too is for the good"), a favorite saying of one of Gamson's forebears, Talmudic scholar Nachum ish Gamzu, who found God's hand even in tragedy. The full-evening work features a cast of fourteen American and three Polish performers, with text spoken and sung in Hebrew, Polish, English, Yiddish, Bulgarian and German.
