Nikon D4 Release Video It's here! The Nikon D4 has arrived and it is a freaking HOT camera! For the past months I have been working in silence with an amazingly talented crew and three of the best athletes on the planet producing my short D4 launch film "WHY". It was like Christmas morning when Nikon called and described the new camera and all of its incredible features. All I could think was that this is the camera we have been waiting for. Then the gift of all gifts... "Corey, dream up a film that you would like to shoot. You pick the topic. You pick the location. It's your film... only requirement is you show off the features of the new camera." My favorite quote from the call was "You have a blank white canvas and it's up to you to fill it". I had to pinch myself several times to confirm that the call was real. Everyone involved has been tight lipped about the project for months and today we can finally begin to share some of the assets and get fired up about the camera!!! I have always been facinated by those people that are the best at what they do. Those that operate on the edge; scientists, artists, musicians, athletes, etc. Always the question that I find myself asking is "WHY"? What deep inside drives them? What does the world look like through their eyes? Those that live on the edge, push the envelope, redefine sports and industries operate in a space all to themselves. In my Nikon D4 launch film I wanted to visually portray the beauty and intensity of the athletes doing what they do best while also delving into their heads and answering the question "WHY"? There was a very simple list of criteria used when selecting the athletes for this film. 1. They needed to be the best in the world at what they do. 2. They needed to be true role modes / heros. (In short, no ego and just simply fantastic people). Dane, Rebecca and Alex fulfill the requirements in spades! As it seems to be with many shoots, the schedule for WHY was INSANE! In just 13 days we went from Veracruz, Mexico to Moab, Utah to Joshua Tree, California. With a fantastic crew of eight amazingly talented people, three of the worlds best athletes, over 20 pieces of luggage, three D4 prototypes, an rc helicopter and enough RedBull and ClifBars to keep us awake and moving, the entire journey was epic! Huge days, little sleep, lost bags, crashed helicopter (the D4 lived), speeding tickets (talked our way out of both ;-), wicked mosquito bites, flu, and a trip to the urgent care - all the prerequisites for a great shoot. Just the way I like it! Special thanks to everyone that helped on this production! Dane Henry, Shawn Corrigan, Rex Lint, Mike Hagadorn; you guys are studs! Blaine Deutsch and Marina Rich, thank you for keeping us all on track, organized, fed and looking good (and Marina, thanks for loving me and being the best wife in the world). Gen Umei, Soichi Hayashi, Jason Jenkins and Mike Corrado; thank you for the opportunity! Dane Jackson, Alex Honnold and Rebecca Rusch, you guys really made the film and answered the question WHY!!! Tommy Thompson and Chris McNamara; thanks for keeping us safe and getting me into the coolest camera positions possible! Amazing team and thank you everyone who helped! When it is all said and done by far the most exciting part is the future. It's about the collective creativity and vision of the photo and video community and what we will all create when we get a D4 in our hands. One thing is for certain, WHY was just the tip of the iceberg! Making of the Nikon D4 Release Video I have often said, if I wasn't a filmmaker and photographer, I would be a teacher. There's great satisfaction in sharing knowledge & experience to help spark the creative fire in others. When Nikon approached me to be a part of the D4 release project not only did they ask me to produce a video and stills, showing off the attributes of the new camera, they were also looking for a behind the scenes video spot detailing how "WHY" came together. This was an amazing opportunity, as it allowed me to simultaneously be both a filmmaker/photographer and a teacher. Though this meant everyone in the crew had to work twice as hard, especially Dane Henry. Capturing the action behind the scenes became just as important as the hero footage and stills. "HOW of WHY" is a great illustration of everyone's hard work and ability to multitask, plus proof that we all had a lot fun along the way! In this spirit, now is a perfect opportunity to thank the key teachers that shared their knowledge with me. Thank you Bob Porter, George Egbert, James DuPratt, Jim McNay and Greg Lewis - I am forever grateful for the time you spent helping me to find my passion for adventure and storytelling. Text: So you want to be a writer?, Charles Bukowski Original Music: Hanan Townshend It always happens eventually. Maybe when you're 20, 25 or 30. There comes a time in life when we all have to choose the path to take. And everyone tells us what we should do. Our parents, our teachers, our bosses… Dewar’s isn't like that. Dewar’s tells us to choose the path that leads us to what we like, to what we've been made for. That's the true meaning of success. No-one should tell us how to live or what to do. We should only remember that, when the time comes, when we look back, we must ask ourselves one question: how much of me is left in me? And we mustn't regret the answer. Many are already making their way on the paths they've chosen. They're young people with a story to tell, a life that can inspire many others. They're the stars of Dewar's first global campaign. Livetrue is a message, a platform, a true story, an inspiration, a label for the lives of those who've turned their passion into their driving force.

Black Diamond athlete Alex Honnold has skills—serious, bone-crusher rock climbing skills. Case in point: check out this video of Honnold onsighting two of the hardest 5.13 crack climbs in the Utah desert: Trail of Tears and No Way Jose. Lacking a second ascent since the late-great Jose Pereyra's FA back in 1998, No Way Jose had gained a hefty rep with a grade rumored to be in the 5.13+ range. Honnold, as he often does, coolly dispatched the route onsight with little fanfare, calling it one of the best cracks he'd ever done. Fortunately photographer Andrew Burr was there to capture the action and put together this video.

BD Athlete Alex Honnold wants to be left alone. No, not really, but he did take the unusual approach of climbing alone on fixed lines as he worked to free a route on Yosemite's Leaning Tower, a 1500-foot prow of overhanging granite, that Todd Skinner had originally tried more than a decade ago. This past fall Alex managed to free the lower portion of the route (naming it A Gift From Wyoming and grading it mid-range 5.13), but the 5.14/5.15 business on the headwall waits unredpointed. Here is Part #2 (filmed and edited by John David Dickey) which follows Alex as he makes the first ascent. Part #1, which introduces Alex's motivations for tackling the first ascent challenge, can be watched here: http://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/en-us/journal/climb/all/video-1-bd-athlete-alex-honnold-making-the-first-ascent-of-ia-gift-from-wyomingi-513-on-yosemites-leaning-tower This video was previewed in the Climbing 2013 digital catalog—28 pages of exclusive photos, videos and stories of first ascent from the past and present.
