Resting on the northeast corner of the Mexican Caribbean, Cancun itself was built on a site selected as the ideal spot for a new tourist development by the Mexican government. The state of Quintana Roo was still a territory and this area had few inhabitants when Cancun was built. It is composed of fourteen miles of pristine white beaches shaped like a number "7", home to Maya archaeological wonders, turquoise seas, a bountiful underwater world, and world-class vacation amenities. It is still considered the gateway to the Mayan World ("El Mundo Maya"). Mayan temples and ritual sites are everywhere, some smothered by lush jungle, others easily accessible. Good tourist attractions.

Cancun is safe to travel.     Every year, millions of visitors from around the world travel into Mexico for pleasure, business or educational purposes. In fact, over 550,000 travelers venture into Mexico on a daily basis, from which 150,000 are U.S. citizens.     The Mexican government spends a considerable amount of resources to protect tourists from every country. As a result, resorts and other tourist destinations do not have the type of drug-related crime that is seen in the border regions or along the primary trafficking routes.     Mexico is a beautiful and huge tourist destination, and it would be a shame to let the problems in a few and little specific regions put a damper on enjoying the rest of this friendly country.     From time to time, the U.S. State Department issues Travel Warning reports to make sure U.S. citizens are aware of any international security concerns. The most recent report dated February 8, 2012 highlights areas that are considered safe for travel as well as areas without a current travel advisory: Cancun is safe to travel.     Cancun is safe to travel.
