VIEW OF GRASS/TREE ON PLAIN STORY: US-born model and Bollywood actress Nargis Fakhri is in Kenya to help raise awareness and support around conservation efforts to save rhinos from extinction. Fakhri is best known outside India for her appearance in the popular reality series, ‘America's Next Top Model’s and a small role in the upcoming Hollywood film 'Spy', which stars Jason Statham, Melissa McCarthy and Jude Law. Fakhri posed for photographs with ‘Sudan’, the planet’s last remaining male northern white rhino, and met with managers at Ol Pejeta, a 90,000-acre conservancy in central Kenya. “I think for me it’s a natural connection to nature and animals, so when I got invited by Ol Pejeta to come out here and meet Sudan, I was over the moon like my heart was filled with joy. I said yes right away, please I would like to come down and support and bring awareness to the fact that he’s the last white male rhino, northern white male rhino,” Fakhri said. Sudan and his two female companions are three of the world’s five remaining northern-white rhino subspecies after their numbers were decimated by poaching. Sudan - brought here from a Czech zoo - is a relatively old rhino and hopes that he would be able to naturally procreate with the two females are dwindling. Ol Pejeta’s managers have ramped up and diversified their awareness campaigns and funding drives in recent years. They hope that their persistence will not only result in the survival and protection of wildlife, but also help boost tourist numbers to Kenya that have been adversely affected by travel advisories. Tourism is the East African nation’s second biggest foreign exchange earner, and revenues are critical in the fight here to protect wildlife and millions of jobs in the sector. “One of the greatest pleasures in the world is when I join visitors who are coming here for the first time and you just watch their eyes light up and they see a rhino on the plain for the first time and you just know that it’s an experience they will never ever forget and that’s something I want those stars to communicate to the world so they can come and visit us,” said Robert Breare, Ol Pejeta’s Chief Operating Officer. Ol Pejeta is East Africa’s biggest rhino conservancy, with 106 of the animals under guard here. The area also plays host to other endangered species like elephants whose tusks - like the rhinos’ horns - are also highly prized in the East.
