The Anacostia River was for many years known as Washington, DC's "forgotten river" for its historical neglect relative to the more famous Potomac. The river begins with a series of tributaries in wealthy DC suburbs in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, Maryland before passing by some of DC's most financially challenged neighborhoods. No longer forgotten, local governments are working hard to restore the river and residents of the DC metro area are beginning to rediscover the Anacostia as a community asset and a place for recreation and reflection. This panel will apply an environmental justice lens to the degradation and restoration of the Anacostia River and look for parallels in Maryland's other prominent urban waters, the Baltimore Harbor.
