Last Thursday I was pleasantly surprised to find some fresh dirt melted out. Since then spring and summer ended and the tram reopened. We're back in winter 2011, v1.5. It will most likely be a while before things are back to the brown pow on the pass so when you want to go shred, plan on hiking. There are also trail work days coming soon- check out http://www.tetonfreedomriders.org/Calendar.html for info on when and where organized trail work will be going on. I've been getting dialed on my new bike & gear and I've gotta say- riding tacky Teton Pass trails with a plush, efficient bike is the only thing that can really fill in for long pow turns on fat skis. During the rare times you can do both (within a mile), well, that's the kind of thing that keeps you in Jackson. That... and the shopping for contemporary western art.

Sweeter than saccharin. The storm finished cold, leaving us with some good 'ol blowah under sunny skies. In my humble view, it was rad. Very freaking rad. I hope you agree. A little over a week ago I saw Vish Matepi's video on VitalMTB with this same view. Check it out: http://vimeo.com/14287562 I took an older 150cm ski pole, cut off the basket end and took off the grip. Bent the grip side end of the pole to match the curve of my helmet, and screwed it into my helmet with some hose clamp type mounts. Increasing the diameter of the camera end of the pole with duct tape, I used GoPro's handlebar mount with the cam hanging upside down, facing back. Finally, added an L bracket off the back of my helmet to add a counterweight- in this case I used two Princeton Tec bike light batteries. End result...well, you get to watch me for over 4 minutes...hence "Vain-Cam". However, I think it's fun to mix the standard POV shots up, and this was a cool test. I'm glad I didn't see anyone else on the trails, because I did look ridiculous. Check out the drop on Fuzzy Bunny at 2:09 and Willie shredding next to me at 2:30!

This March I spent a little over two weeks in Switzerland on a film trip with the Meatheads. While the original plan was to chase storms around the Alps, we ended up staying in Schwanden and exploring the Glarus Valley the entire time. Why? Conditions elsewhere in the Alps were no better, we we didn't have any competition for first tracks, and the family we stayed with in Schwanden was amazing. Thank you so much to the entire Ortlieb family! Sami and David are incredibly talented skiers, Felix was kind and patient with us, and Ursi should be sainted. Thanks to all of their friends and relatives that also helped us out! I had a ton of footage from the travels and valley and really wanted to show more than just skiing, so I hope you manage to get through the first half. Second half is same 'ol helmet mounted GoPro footie...but in Switzerland, so it's cool! Cheers, AW

With winter looming in Jackson, I went out to get a downhill lap on the Lithium trail on Teton Pass before any more snow piled up. One awesome evening lap lead to another the next morning...which in turn brought on a few more laps throughout the week. A few hundred bike-hike intervals later with my GoPros and I've got solid documentation of one of the best downhill trails in the US. A big thanks to Courtney and Willie for joining me on a few of the outings. A huge thanks to Teton Freedom Riders and all the volunteers that have put in time on the trail system around Jackson.

                    from Andrew Whiteford Added 27.3K 193 42

Shot in December, one of my goals for this video was to show off the great conditions we had here in Jackson. It also shows a couple "firsts" for my ski year: first Saratoga lap (:13), First Tram (1:02), first Alta Chutes, (1:05), first pass lap (2:33), first tomahawk (3:23)...(first but certainly not the last!). I also wanted to show just how playful and fun skiing is. I had so much footage that it was hard to limit it to a minute or two so I hope you make it all the way through...4 minutes is a real challenge for people these days! Music: Sigur Ros: Inní Mér Syngur Vitleysingur (While I don't know what they're singing, it's hard not to be carried by the emotion and rhythm of their music. Check them out! And in the meantime, maybe I'll try learning Icelandic.) Shout outs to GoPro, Line, Orage, Backcountry.com, Dakine, Full Tilt, Smith Optics, and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. All awesome companies and great people, and if you have any questions on what I'm using, hit me up!

Music: "The Hunter" by On an On : http://www.itsonanon.com/ December and January were highlighted by persistent layers in our snowpack, but as things began to stabilize the storms started rolling in and the skiing was great. I spent a lot of days shooting photos with Jay Goodrich and video with KGB Productions, but managed a few relaxing solo days, or just shredding with friends. As February progressed, storm after storm slathered the mountain and it was obvious that "It" was "On", as people say. I took advantage of some soft landings and worked on one of my tricks, which I call "rolling down the windows". Feel free to use it on the dance floor. Alas, just as the big lines were really filling in, I went and tossed myself into my own bombhole and went splat. I skied out but could feel a little more play in my right knee than the left, which lead to a visit to the doctor...which lead to meeting my health insurance deductible...which lead to about 6 weeks off snow to let my MCL heal. Fortunately, it was only MCL and no surgery was necessary. I've been able to recover really well, which I certainly attribute to the physical therapy sessions at Excel PT here in Jackson. Now as I type this I'm looking a pile of gear that I'm packing up to make my first trip to Alaska. I got a call a few days ago to join a team from Dynafit and Backcountry.com and we're heading towards the promised land for some human powered ascents outside of Valdez...but let's save that for another episode! Thanks for watching, sharing, and commenting. To all my friends and sponsors, you're the freakin' best!
