It is 200 years to this February (2015) since Sri Lanka lost its reign of kings which is recorded back to 505BC. I produced this programme ‘The Royal Palaces of Sri Lanka’ in 2002 for Sri Lankan National television (SLRC) as 4 episode documentary. Dr Malinga Amarasinghe has done the research and it was originally telecasted in Sinhala and later a veteran broadcaster, late Mr. Jimmy Barucha narrated this to English. I have done a bit of editing to reduce the duration and to make it as two parts. The programmes were brought to the UK in DVDs hence the quality is not as good as the original production.

I Waruna Lelwala produced this deep researched documentary for Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (The National Television) in 2007. And I re-edited the 4 episode documentaries in to two for online viewers. The inspiration was gained under Dr Malinga Amarasinghes research works and of course Prof. Chandra Wickramagamage has done many researches in this particular subject. The Sri Lankan Buddha statue undoubtedly an adaptation of Indian arts but it has its own feature. We travelled all over the country to capture this fantastic creation and as a format I used Dharshana Jude’s drawings to tell the story other than just showing statues. I sincerely thank to my crew especially Ranjan Gurusingh who was the cameraman and Dimuth Kuruppu for their great contribution to the production. The English version of the production will come soon.

A sacred Bodhi Tree was dedicated during a ceremony conducted at the Holy Vajrasana Temple & Retreat Center near Sanger, California, on May 11, 2014. This tree was a gift from a Sri Lankan Temple and a descendent from the Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, that was brought there by the nun Sanghamitta in 288 BCE as s start from the original tree under which Shakyamuni Buddha sat to become enlightened. The temple site has been recognized as a holy site--the fourth vajra throne in the world and the first one outside of Asia. Go to holyvajrasana.org for more information.

Sihashakthi CBO in Palamugama Anuradhapura is a village level community group that has been established through Stromme Foundation supported Master Plan project of 2009-2013. SF believes in a hierarchy of capacity building and strengthening of civil society starting from individual families, going up to small groups of 5 five families and village level CBOs. In this short documentary we see how this empowering mechanism has worked for the benefit of the poor people in Anuradhapura by providing a forum for discussion, empowering people to solve their own problems, encourage saving habits, provide loan facilities at low interest rates and livelihood support.
