            • 2014 Sem Presser Lecture: Edward Burtynsky

from World Press Photo / Added

An active lecturer on photographic art, Edward Burtynsky presented “Consuming Nature” as the Sem Presser Lecture at the 2014 Awards Days. The Sem Presser Lecture is presented in cooperation with Stichting Sem Presser Archief (http://www.sempresser.nl/). Born in 1955 of Ukrainian heritage at St. Catharines, Ontario, Edward Burtynsky is a graduate of Ryerson University (Bachelor of Applied Arts in Photography) and studied graphic art at Niagara College in Welland. He links his early exposure to the sites and images of the General Motors plant in his hometown to the development of his photographic work. His imagery explores the intricate link between industry and nature, combining the raw elements of mining, quarrying, manufacturing, shipping, oil production and recycling into eloquent, highly expressive visions that find beauty and humanity in the most unlikely of places. Take 5 minutes to swim with the Alewife. The Alewife is a "River Herring" it's an anadramous fish, meaning it can survive in both fresh water and salt water. The Alewife lives it's life out in the ocean, but comes back to fresh water rivers to spawn. A common problem is that the Alewife faces some obstacles. Because of the industrial revolution many dams have been made for mills of many kinds. We no longer need dams for mills anymore, but these dams have been left. In many cases it is not possible to remove the dams because of structural issues and land that would be flooded if the dam was taken out. So, fish-ladders are installed to help the Alewife get over the dam. For many years the Grandgabel Park dam in downtown Riverhead NY received a fish-ladder which was very labor intensive to install and take out after the Alewife run was over, so the Peconic Estuary Program received a grant to install a permanent fish-ladder. What you see is the result of how effective the new fish-ladder works. More to come on our show "On the Water & In the Field"
