A video project for my video editing class, where still images are the main components of the video. Decided to make a video of our recent trip to the Arboretum. I made this for Akira and I. I hope to make better ones after I learn the basics in this class. I don't have video editing experience so don't expect so much. The title is AMORETUM because these pictures were taken on our anniversary and I like to play with words.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by And that has made all the difference. Those are the often cited concluding lines of Robert Frost's poem, "The Road Not Taken," that many use as an encouragement for exploration and non-conformity. But by only quoting the final three lines, we remove them from the context of the entire poem. Frost is not encouraging anyone to take the less-traversed road. In fact, he is commenting that, usually, when we come to a fork, both options are very much equal, but in the future, we will knowingly trick ourselves into believing we chose the better path. So in a sense, by the large majority of us fixating only on the final three lines, we are falling into the exact trap that Frost so eloquently laid out. I chose to shoot a video about Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor, MI - on the University of Michigan campus - because, firstly, my office was working on a series of videos about places on campus that are meaningful to students, and secondly, because I really see immense beauty in nature, and think it plays in important role in providing a grand theater for our own personal reflection and contemplation. I shot this video over the course of two years with no real story or vision in place. I wanted to make a video about the arb, and I knew I wanted my shots to be captured from a distance more so than within the action. I slowly realized that poetry would be perfect for carrying a storyline through the video, and Frost's poem was almost a natural fit. Especially because of his connection to U-M. A Michigan Daily article (U-M's student paper) from 1998 rumored that Robert Frost might have written the poem about his time spent in Ann Arbor's beloved arboretum. Frost was, after all, a poet-in-residence at U-M in the 1920s. But with this particular poem being penned back in 1915 in New Hampshire as part of a letter to his friend Edward Thomas, that inspiration appears to be wishful thinking. Again, we see a case of people glorifying the past in a way that, if you really look into it, you'll find is completely untrue. Just as I use nature for contemplation, as well as both poetry and prose, I intend this piece to be used for contemplation and reflection by its audience. I know that most will take it as an "anthem for nonconformity" - as Dan Chiasson put it - but I hope some will look deeper. If anything, I hope it will inspire you to go outside and think.
