from Ulrich Museum of Art Added 31 0 0

Dismissed by early critics, then embraced by the general public, pop art represents a turning point in the history of art. Mamiya addressed the consumer culture of the 1960s and how pop art developed in this Ulrich Museum Art Historian Talk on January 31, 2013. What were the factors—economic, political, and social—that led to the postwar consumer culture that dominates our lives even today? And how did pop art interpret issues that faced consumers of the 1960s? This discussion will focus on the home—a primary arena for consumer activity—and the role of women as consumers.

Juvenile in Justice exhibition artist Richard Ross introduces us to young people with the least voice, from families with the least resources, in neighborhoods with the least power in his Artist Talk, "Tempus Fugit," February 6, 2014 at the Ulrich Museum. These are YOUR kids—come and meet them.

Devoted to the flora and fauna of the rainforest, Nature's Toolbox exhibition artist Isabella Kirkland paints exacting representations in the style of Dutch still life of the 17th century. Lush and verdant, her paintings also stand in elegy to the threatened, extinct, and newly-found species of western science. Although an artist, she is also a research associate at the California Academy of Sciences where she has documented biota in jeopardy of extinction for 20 years. Kirkland spoke at the Ulrich Museum in the two-day symposium "Nature's Impact, Art's Force," co-hosted by the Wichita Art Museum, on Nov. 8, 2013.
