    • HOMEBIRTH (performance)

from Alexandra Reghina Draghici Added 148 0 0

Invited to put up a piece in Nicosia, Cyprus as part of the Performance and Live Art Platform curated by Yiota Demetriou, I decided to expand HOMEBIRTH and devise a second performance. I invited artists Stephanie Merulla and cellist/performer Tatiana Judyka to join the project. Drawing on the first performance, we further explore the process of restoration through the body. In Paphos, we collected found objects: stone, salt, palette, water jug, and flowers. With these objects we explore bathing as an act of renewal. We further connect the theme of travel/technology to moving through states of transformation both physically and psychically. In ancient Greece the menstrual cycle is referred to as the “wandering uterus” and so the piece started to take on questions about the living womb as the source of drifting and its effect on female psychology, specifically the gift of prophecy. Imitation and reproduction became important themes as we reflected upon the restored mosaics in the house of Orpheus, Aion, and Theseus in Paphos Archeological Park Choreography is inspired by reproduction; it is both cyclic and ritualistic. We embody and offer up the qualities of the island to our audience (ex: sea salted water drink). Through embodied choreography we begin to weave a culture founded on reiteration. The set up is such that performer and audience begin to emulate each other, blurring the line between them. In the beginning we lie like restored mosaics with an audience taking photos of us on display before them. Throughout the piece, audience and performer expand upon yet another culture of replicas. Performed at The Point Center of Contemporary Art Performance and Live Art Platform Nicosia, Cyprus Creators: Alexandra R Draghici, Tatiana Judyka, Stephanie Merulla Directed by Alexandra R Draghici

          • Close Encounters With Art

            from Matt Plummer Added 19 0 0

Art History entails more than looking at images in books or on screens, it involves close encounters with physical objects and artefacts. Victoria has an excellent art collection, its own purpose built gallery, The Adam Art Gallery (http://www.adamartgallery.org.nz), and close proximity to Te Papa Tongarewa, the National Library, and a host of other art spaces. This allows students to have direct engagement with art works and archival objects and artefacts, and to get a feel for the kinds of experiences generated by such encounters. For more information about the Art History Programme at Victoria University of Wellington, please email art-history@vuw.ac.nz or visit http://www.victoria.ac.nz/sacr/about/overview-intros/art-history Filmed by Steve Cochran Edited by Matt Plummer Music: “Between Ears” by David Bayley.

"X-Peri-Mental" (Vol. 7) : Cut, copy, mix" This video is part of my serie "UFO - Unidentified Footage Objects". (Re)discover my "UFO" on the Vimeo channel: vimeo.com/channels/330913 or on my website dorianne-wotton.com This is an excerpt from a VJ mix The music was performed live by Exomene (exomene.com) Any comments are welcome (provided they are constructive). X-Peri-Mental? Losing all perceptions of reality. Swimming in a comfortable world, fluffy and foggy, the sequence of gestures, movements and situations taking place not in slow motion, but rather appearing illuminated by brief flashes of light as regular and as a result of a strobe unit in this excessive and dazzling moment, the music filling all space, seeming to accumulate in an opaque and solid mass, then diluting in color, sound waves and visual impressions becoming indistinguishable, based blocks of concrete materiality, almost rough, space and time turning confused, inextricably mingled in a kind of furious and informs matter, all of the blurred perceptions sinking into a deep obfuscation.. A total blackout. And waking up without remembering anything, emerging suddenly from a deep sleep without dreams. X-Peri-Mental! Un black-out total. Et se réveiller sans se souvenir de rien, émergeant brusquement d’un lourd sommeil sans rêve. X-Peri-Mental ! Musique par Exomène: exomene.com

This project aims to re-think the technological, sociological and ecological aspects related to how to wash clothes all around the world. How it is possible to re-think the technological and sociological ways we wash clothes around the world, in accordance with economical, cultural and environemental aspects ? Is it possible to create new modes, new technologies, new ways to liberate people in this task, in a consciousness of sustainable developpement and respect of the natural and human environment ? Is it possible to bring solutions in some isolated communities for people using soap and washing by hand cloths in rivers and water sources? How to make people thing about the water resources and the importance to take care of this vital element? -Most people on the world washes clothes by hand. -Water sources, rivers, lakes are the most common enviroments where washing by hand happens. -It's a huge amount of time for kids and women, the most involved. Men as well are affected. -Access to water is difficult. It can be filtered and re-used. -Chemicals are used, toxic for the hands, body and water sources. -There is not an action taken in general for the gray water production and how it pollute rivers. -In most of the places there is no need of great technologies. -But where art and crafts still alive, there is a posibility to find out different systems to make a change for this situation. -It also can be thinking to work collectivilly to avoid pollution in rivers. But what people will do if a machine replace their work? -Can it be that the solution is to believe that each family in the world should acquire an industrial ‘western style’ washing machine ? NOT WAY! It is a non sense idea! There are three basic problems for that: Problems of water (in & out), problem of a lack of electricity, a lack of money. Being aware of the different cases for each context. Taking in account the economical, cultural and environnemental situations. Is it possible to re-think the technics facing each situation? Is it possible to propose new and creative ways of washing clothes no matter how weird it looks at the begining? Is it possible to make use of new technologies in certain cases, where open source hardwares and softwares apply? YES, well, we think it is possible! http://oswash.org http://ark0.tumblr.com

                • The lotus flower: purity of the heart and mind

                  from CADCAI Added 79 0 0

This is a carving of a lotus flower. The lotus flower is integrated into so much of the Chinese society and wherever you look you'll always find this particular type of flower. It originates from the Chinese Temple that was in Cairns since the late 1880s when the Chinese community was at its biggest. The temple has a lot of pieces that are being looked after by CADCAI. We think they might have used these lotus pieces - that come as a pair - to hold back curtains inside the temple. You can see some of the material that comes out from underneath. The piece looks like a mirror image of itself - which is what the lotus flower looks like when it opens up on the water. The lotus symbolises purity of the heart and mind in Chinese culture. Object Story by Emma Vela, CADCAI member and volunteer.

The Cormackstown Heritage Centre, Holycross, Thurles, Co Tipperary is without doubt one of the largest single private collections of rural memorabilia to be found anywhere in today’s Ireland. Spanning some three centuries, these rare and now almost forgotten “tools of our once rural trade,” used to develop rural Ireland down through the years, recently went on display.
