Dreaming of Spirit Animals features the work of Pacific Northwest artist, Cappy Thompson and her process of creating a large scale public art piece (the largest painted glass window in existence) for the Sea-Tac airport addition. The documentary explores Thompson’s unique relationship to the function of narrative and autobiography in glass art as well as her interest in dreams and mythology and her methods of incorporating diverse inspirations for her glass work (including Sufi stories, Persian folktales and Native American myths). The painting and fabrication of the 90' x 33' piece was completed at a family-run glass studio in Germany. The film was shot in Seattle and Taunusstein-Wehen, Germany and incorporates digital video, digital stills, and time lapse videography. Crew included: Sally Cloninger (Co-Producer, Editor and Cinematographer), Peter Randlette (Co-Producer and Sound Design), Gretchen Langheld (Original Music), and Allegra Hinkle (additional camera, post-production). 2004 (33:00)

New York-based artist collective Type A, consisting of Adam Ames and Andrew Bordwin, employs a variety of media to create artwork that playfully explores the nature of collaboration and competition. Working together since 1998, their work looks closely at tensions inherent to these interactions. This documentary showcases their work by examining their relationship as both friends and collaborators, and how their humor and thoughtfulness shape their approach to art. Featured is Type A’s project developed for 100 Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park that explores the meaning of teamwork with IMA staffers as they interact in a variety of engaging (and harrowing) exercises.

[undergrad student film] Art on the Block is a 20:00 documentary that puts a human face on art as agent of urban renewal. Through the parallel voices of artists, average citizens and a commissioning corporation, Art on the Block connects Midwest talent, civic pride and for-profit philanthropy. Art on the Block documents the work of ten Midwest artists creating site-specific art for H&R Block's new world headquarters in Kansas City. The film follows artists Vernon Brejcha, Brent Collins, Lisa Grossman, Matt Kirby, William Lobdell, Lonnie Powell, Leslie Reuther, David Spear, Stretch and Dierk Van Keppel to draw attention to art as grease for the wheels of progress and art as authentic self-expression. Aired on KCPT-TV (PBS) and won an "Excellence in Production" award from the International Student Media Festival in Los Angeles. This short documentary, my first official selection for the 2013 Tallgrass Film Festival Kansas Filmmaker's Showcase, highlights the philosophy and talents of Mark D. Pendergrass, a wall mural artist who resides in Wichita, KS. I was drawn to his style which reminded me of the works of R. Crumb and Mort Drecker. As I got to know Mark better, he opened up enough for an in-depth interview and I was, I feel, lucky enough to catch the essence of this unique and talented artist. You will find samples of his work, interviews with people who have commissioned his art for their establishments and finally actually see a mural created from concept to finish.
