Shana McCaw and Brent Budsberg (McCaw/Budsberg Collaborations) shot this video on location in the Utah salt flats while they were in residence in Wendover, UT with The Center for Land Use Interpretation. This video is a response to the region's use of berms to prevent flooding in an almost perpetually hot, dry, desert-like area. When McCaw and Budsberg were there, late spring rains left one side of this berm is filled with about 4" of water, while the other side was dry. Here, in an act of total futility, our character attempts to bail water from one side into the other. Together, the problem-solving berm and the man are in conflict with the landscape and themselves. This is a one-minute clip from a looped video installation.

Sowing Seeds (Beej Bonna)” is an interactive artist’s village residency where a residency is held every year in the month of December for a period of approximately 14 days. This interactive residency sowed the seeds of a highly creative conjunction among the rural and the contemporary artists. This mile-stone project welcomed different art forms from national and international artists and helped in exchanging art and ideas. “Sowing Seeds” is a project that intends to create dialogues and exchanges amongst artists beyond the national identity and serve as an opportunity for rural artists to meet, share and exchange ideas, visions, and diverse views order to create a deeper understanding on art. It acts as a medium of developing and improving the artistic impressions of experts as well as emerging artists. As an alternative art space in INDIA, “Sowing Seeds” is geared to meet the challenges required to organize such contemporary artist village camp (workshop) within rural areas and give rise to a new era in visual art. November brings our second Members Residency with London-based artist Richard Stone moving to Leeds to work from Patrick Studios Project Space. Richard’s works materialise in many forms from objects and installation through to site-specific interventions, exploring themes of self, place, absence and transience. Existing materials and found objects are seductively reworked or reconfigured through physical processes and conceptually layered strategies. Richard’s pieces have included figures engulfed in ghostly auras of smooth amorphous wax, erased landscapes, assemblages of earth, flowers, salt and other delicate ephemera, and performative works. The residency coincides with a point of departure in his practice, and he seeks to develop new approaches and to experiment with new materials and methods of display for his sculptural and installation work.

Residencies allow artists and researchers to explore the museum’s immense collection of cultural and material surplus through site-specific projects that contribute to Elsewhere’s concepts, collections, and communities. Residents develop projects in response to Elsewhere’s contexts, applying their talents and skills in site-specific ways. Artists, musicians, curators, scholars, designers, writers, gardeners, urban agriculturalists, homesteaders, system-thinkers, game-makers, and other individuals and groups working across medias are encouraged to apply. Residency production resources include access to a wood shop, fabric workshop, library, storefront theater, vintage wardrobe, communal kitchen, as well as myriad connections with Greensboro neighbors and Elsewhere’s national artist network. All projects are supported by a team of curators who advise the creative process and provide critical feedback, community connections, and event support. Elsewhere offers an exceptional place for rethinking people, places, and things in everyday and extraordinary life. Collaborative teams are encouraged to apply. Project residencies range from 4-6 weeks, research residencies range from 2-4 weeks. Curator positions, South Elm Project Commissions, and internships are also available.
