        • Artist Talk – Ed Atkins, 18 March 2015

          01:13:47

from Contemporary Art Society / Added

A fantastic opportunity to hear about the work of Ed Atkins in the artist’s own words. It was a particular privilege to have Atkins speak at the Contemporary Art Society at such a pivotal time in his artistic career with his solo exhibition Recent Ouija currently on show at The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Atkins works primarily with writing, sound and video. Rooted in literature, cinema and music, his work preys on these categories, their genres and their legibilities: his works are often abortive, interruptive and abject. Atkins’s work seeks to explore the corporeal and material world through so-called immaterial, digital technologies. In 2013 the Contemporary Art Society’s Acquisition Scheme purchased Atkins’ film The Trick Brain for The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh. This talk took place on 18 March 2015 at the Contemporary Art Society, London. The artist appears courtesy of Cabinet Gallery, London. http://www.cabinet.uk.com/

Harboured is a real time exchange between the Port of Duluth and the Port of Auckland – respectively the artist’s hometown and the city in which the artist is establishing a new life. A personal narrative interweaves with issues of contemporary immigration – finding comfort in familiarity, navigating vast physical and emotional distances, integrating into a new society. For the artist (the daughter of a merchant marine), visual and emotional connections to New Zealand have been made through the shipping industry, a constant and beloved presence in her childhood. In Harboured photographs, presented as large-scale textiles, come together with live video feed to negotiate these distances between father and daughter, Duluth and Auckland. This video uses footage from the exhibition Harbored and an excerpt from a conversation between artist Mickey Smith and curator Emma Ng. http://www.enjoy.org.nz/node/3422 Thank you to Andrew Matautia for the video footage and editing.

PechaKucha Night Hamptons, Vol. 11 Philippe Cheng is a fine artist based in Bridgehampton, New York. Born and raised in New York, he was educated at The School of Visual Art and New York University. He is currently completing work on three book projects. A landscape book is entitled, Still, The East End Photographs, a second about the complexities of inner city children growing up in Coney Island and a third entitled Requiems, a collection of images about how Americans deal with issues of death and dying, created in collaboration with artist Bastienne Schmidt. He is also directing his first feature documentary entitled, On the Cusp, which was shot during the historic election of 2008. Illuminated by the words and images of 175 women, and filmed on the East End of Long Island, the film speaks against forced silence, while honoring chosen silence – creating an affirmation that every voice matters and is necessary for true democracy. http://www.philippecheng.com
