1. Schattenspiele - Shadow Games

I'm a big fan of art spaces, museums and galleries, but any other indoor or outdoor venue may qualify. While art spaces need art objects, art objects need art spaces to have a powerful effect. But increasingly I see the visitors of art spaces, deeply immersed in the experience or maybe just going through the motions, as art objects in themselves. It is a form of performance art because the object is constantly moving and transforming itself. Not all art is good art, of course, which applies to this category as well. I've captured some visitors of the Thyssen art museum in Madrid against a bright background that turns them into shadow forms. Sound: N.S.

The Fabre Museum was founded by the artist François-Xavier Fabre in 1825. Fabre was born in Montpellier in 1766 and he was taught painting by a master of Classicism, Jacques Louis David. The museum is housed in a former 17th century Jesuit college close to Montpellier's main square. Major renovations were carried out on the museum between 2003 and 2007. The museum displays an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures from the 17th through to the 20th century. I made this movie from stills taken with my Panasonic ZS30 camera on a visit in July 2013.

      • Museo del Novecento, Milan

Located directly across the Duomo, Milan's stunning cathedral, the Museo del Novecento (Museum of the New Century) has a large collection of twentieth century art, from paintings and sculptures to installations. Most of the space is devoted to Italian artists. The stepless staircase at the front of the building is similar to that in New York's Guggenheim museum. While enjoying the art, you also get fantastic views of the cathedral and the Piazza del Duomo from different angles and heights. The ticket was free. I wonder if they haven't been told about monetizing art exhibitions. In contrast, the Catholic Church which owns the cathedral is renting out a large monitor on its left side displaying commercials.

The Public Gardens is one of Milan’s big downtown parks. Two art museums are adjacent to it, as well as a museum of natural history and a planetarium. This video shows some of the art spaces and the park grounds. The jazz music was recorded in the park refreshment centre, the Bar Bianco, where a group of musicians just got together to jam for themselves - and for us (thank you). Other people in the bar were playing cards or chess. The first art space that appears, PAC (Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea), had an exhibition of photographs from the South African Apartheid period. The second is the Galleria d'Arte Moderna with beautiful sculptures.

This is the February 2013 program of The Communicators Club, which provides passionate, professional communicators in Central Massachusetts a way to exchange resources and creativity. Matthias Waschek, executive director of the Worcester Art Museum, shares his vision for broadening the museum’s audience and increasing the region’s awareness of art in its many forms. In a culture of short attention spans and YouTube videos, this is no small feat. But Waschek comes well armed after eight years as executive director of the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and 11 years as director of academic programs at the world-renowned Louvre. Learn more about the Communicators Club and check out our upcoming programs at communicatorsclub.org.

The Barnes Foundation finally made their beleaguered move to the city of Philadelphia. Although there was certainly controversy, and many Philly friends repeatedly told us to go, this was our fist visit. While we were there, the museum was open around the clock, and we managed to visit for a marathon 36 hours. Although we were not allowed to film in the galleries, we hope you'll enjoy our images of the festivities, architecture, and grounds. You'll still have to make the trip to see the art first hand! It's well worth the visit. The music featured, is Indian Wells' "Wimbledon 1980" via The Creative Commons.

There are no internal edits to the moving images; we show films as the creators cut them. Northeast Historic Film hosted art and cultural historians to discuss amateur film, considering aesthetic intent, audiences, and interpretive strategies. Over a day we watched a dozen moving image selections and talked about how we might understand personal film in relation to art history and museum gallery settings. Here is an excerpt.
