For the first New Balance numeric video the team focused on the home of cinema and celebrity, Los Angeles, California. They searched the spaces between the glamour, the fortune and the broken promises. They found that beneath its dazzling surface L.A. is as real and raw as any major metropolis on earth. Skate spots abound in the side-streets and  empty school yards of this glitzy place in the sun. Starring: PJ Ladd, Arto Saari, Levi Brown, Tom Karangelov, Jordan Taylor and Tyler Surrey. Directors Commentary + Extras at http://symirroretry.com - Five entities established in skateboarding share concepts of individuality, limitation, and knowledge learned from a constant evolving culture. A culture eternally cycling, dying, and rebirthing. Forced down dead end pathways by powerful business entities. Manipulated of progression through decensitized internet labyrinths. Two symmetrical beings, parallel in thought, know only that of which is seen. Controlled by a vivid entity yet handicapped by a lack of capacity of free thought and expression. No ambition? No spirit and fulfillment? Paintings of inner reflection. Still, immovable, and wondering; “What is my love and passion?” A documentary expressing the ‘artist’ journey of becoming. A parallel narrative supporting sentiment of fighting against conformity. A contribution of thought challenging comprehension and expansion. The story of symmetrical mirrors, formed as one entity. For our first Creative Departures stop this year, we chose to venture back to Antwerp, Belgium. It is a fitting stop for Gravis, as we have been deeply rooted in the community here for some time. Aside of sponsoring the Antwerp Pro/Am Skate Contest for the past few years, we have been making it a yearly pilgrimage for the skate team to come out to Belgium and the Netherlands. This year we filmed for a few days up the road in Rotterdam which proved to be eventful, visited some better known skate spots in Brussels, then rounded out the trip throwing a three day art show in Antwerp. The art show featured a mixture of Gravis artists and athletes as well as some local artists that were included to bring more of a family vibe to the show. Check out some of the skate spots, restaurants and other places we were hanging on the map below. And yes, there is a red light district in Antwerp. Stay tuned for the next Creative Departures show in Los Angeles this coming February, 2013.
