This opening program will focus on the relation between literature and the context in which it is written. Together with Ronit Matalon and the Flemish writer Kristien Hemmerechts, who will respond to Roni’s lecture, we will discuss several questions: Can the work of a writer, in a heavily politicized society such as Israel/Palestine, be seen as an artistic product in its own merit? How free is an Israeli and/or Palestinian writer if one is continuously expected to reflect on the political situation? And can literature play a role in reframing our narratives about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict? With music by Jazz bassplayer and composer Tony Overwater and the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra. Ronit Matalon Ronit Matalon, born in Israel and daughter of Egyptian-Jewish immigrants, is the author of novels such as The Sound of Our Steps and The One Facing Us, and former journalist of the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz where she worked as a correspondent in Gaza and the West Bank. Her work addresses the deeply-rooted political and social conflicts in Israel, but is simultaneously a collection of stories with universal themes such as love, family relations, and domestic violence. About 'What's Art Got to Do With It'? From April 29th until May 1st 30 artists from Israel, Palestine, the Netherlands, and Flanders come together in De Balie for What’s Art Got to Do with It?, a three-day cultural conference -with discussions, film, dance, theatre, and literature– about art in the context of the conflict, and the complex relations between (the) art (scene), government, and public. An in-depth debate about art in which art itself plays a major role. What’s Art Got to Do with It? is organized by De Balie, Dancing on the Edge, and A Different Jewish Voice.
