It's time for another special treat. We've not shared one of our Short Films in a while, and we figured it's about time we post another. Meagan & Travis' wedding highlighted some of the best spots in Downtown Tulsa full of culture and history; from their rehearsal dinner at Girouard Urban Winery (right next to the fabulous coffee shop and bar Hodges Bend), to their ceremony at the Arts & Humanities Hardesty Arts Center (affectionately known as AHHA) and reception at the Jazz Depot. But no venue or decoration could beat their sweet personal vows to one another, or their emotional first look before their wedding. http://www.danielkbrown.com 2009 Rivers of the Underworld Liguria Study Center for the Arts and Humanities, Bogliasco (Genoa), Italy. Music by Mark K. Johnson Installation by Daniel K. Brown Five apothecary jars (485mm X 150mm each), digital animation, discarded objects, light, shadow and sound, oils and found objects. Greek and Roman mythology (Plato’s Phaedo and Republic, Homer’s Odyssey, Virgil’s Aeneid, and later in Dante’s Commedia) describes five rivers of the Underworld all flowing underground and meeting within the oceans of the southern hemisphere at a point opposite Jerusalem – which aligns closely with the location of New Zealand. The five rivers were Acheron the River of Sorrow, Styx the River of Hatred, Phlegethon the River of Boiling Blood, Cocytus the River of Frozen Tears, and finally the last was Lethe the River of Forgetfulness. The Greeks and Romans believed these five rivers equated to five actual underground rivers in Europe. This work is composed of five large apothecary jars representing ‘water’ from the five rivers of the underworld. The jars are filled with blackened oil surrounding elements and fetishes representing the individual themes of Sorrow, Frozen Tears, Boiling Blood, Hatred, and Forgetfulness. These jars represent the overall work as reliquaries and act as witnesses to the work’s conclusion.

How does music in performance take shape over time? In what ways is musical performance creative, and what knowledge is embodied in it? How does understanding musical performance as a creative practice vary across different global contexts, idioms and performance conditions? These are some of the fascinating questions that a large research team in the Centre for Musical Performance as Creative Practice (CMPCP) has been trying to answer since October 2009 CMPCP film 'Passionate about Performance' (based at the University of Cambridge) explores key aspects of the Centre's work and its ongoing quest to know what lies behind musical performance. CMPCP is a collaboration between the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, King's College London, and Royal Holloway, and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
