1. Watching the Universe Expand

from Anja von der Linden Added 612 0 0

A timelapse of half a night in the dome of the Blanco 4m telescope at Cerro Tololo (http://www.ctio.noao.edu). During these hours, the Dark Energy Survey (DES; http://www.darkenergysurvey.org) was taking observations with the new Dark Energy Camera (the black cylinder at the top of the telescope). DES will survey 1/8th of the entire sky over the next 5 years, with the aim to understand why the Universe's expansion is accelerating. Fortunately, other astronomers also get to use it (http://www.symmetrymagazine.org/article/astronomers-give-dark-energy-camera-rave-reviews). In this video, Orion, Taurus and Jupiter are visible through the dome shutter at ~4-9 seconds. Moonrise occurs 7 seconds into the video. Unfortunately my camera's battery ran out about 1am... ;-)

A journey across the stars and heavens through antiquated astronomical diagrams. I unearthed some dusty old scientific textbooks in my father’s attic, and immediately became inspired by the delicately rendered diagrams, plots and schemata. These purely scientific visual aids became unwitting artworks on their own, which is something I really loved. The short animation explores pathways through astronomy’s roots, dating back to antiquity with its origins in scientific, mythological and astrological practices. The soundtrack is 'Frosti' by Bjork, from the incredible album 'Vespertine'. www.kimoni.co.uk

Just a couple of funny moments about stars being blown up and new stars being created for a civilization that evolved without light, and may have been blinded when the "sun" appears at the whim of their "God". Also, we have a few comments about the initial impressions of the game from that group. Check out the game for yourself on kickstarter! We have a week to go and need about $10,000 more to hit some really good stretch goals! http://kck.st/YRPN6U or http://www.thegamernation.org EONS is an astronomy based resource management game where players take on the role of a Cosmic Architect (GOD) and shape their universe to earn points. All the while, other architects are trying to blow up their stuff so they can win the game. It turns into a wild race to the finish, and the person that manages their resources most effectively will win the game. The game is funded and will be produced, with a street date of August 12, 2013.

Just about every organism on the planet lives its life according to the rhythms of daytime and darkness. Excessive light can cause several human health problems -- from chronic fatigue and migraines to sexual dysfunction -- have also been linked to high-levels of light exposure. Technical notes - This video incorporates the following techniques: light-painting, light-graffiti, timelapse, hologram with iPad and stop motion. Everything was shot on camera, no Particular, Echospace or other CGI light generator.
