A sequence of startrails I collected in July 2011 during a trip in the Pindus mountains of northern Greece. It uses a variety of techniques for processing the images (including layer blending in Photoshop and code I wrote in Matlab). Camera: Canon 500D Lenses: 18-55 @18mm, 50mm, 10-24 @10mm

This video shows a coronal mass ejection (CME) on the Sun. The hot gas (plasma) is accelerated by the Sun's strong magnetic field dynamics, causing a large loop of plasma to be hurled into space. This particular CME is not perfectly Earth-directed, most of the plasma you see flying off will pass north of the Earth and will most likely not affect the Earth. To give you an idea of the scale of things here: The Sun's diameter is roughly 1.4 million km, so that's 109 times that of our home planet. In it's longest visible extent the column of gas here is ~800,000 km long. Video from SDO data in the ultraviolet at 304 Å (in other words, what your seeing is the distribution of ionized Helium), covering the time 10:45-14:00 UTC on Jan 5, 2012.

One of a handful of sequences I took between Christmas and New Year's in 2011 on the island of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. The meteor flashes into existence at 0:04 (anything else you saw flash across the sky was an airplane). It burned up in the atmosphere about 50-60 miles up. The smoke train residual from the meteor lasted over 5 minutes, slowly dissipated by upper atmosphere winds. Details: No dolly (due to travel logistics from the trip), just a tripod. Nikon D7000, ISO 6400, f/3.5, 18mm lens, 25 second exposures with 5 second delay between. No music track with this 13 second time lapse sequence. After I get a few more sequences from there I'll put together a good and proper TL video. :-)

Six days of Comet Lovejoy over the Gippsland Lakes in eastern Victoria (Australia). First clip is on a tracking mount. Others are all on a fixed tripod. The fading of the comet as it moves south each night is clearly visible. The bright light is the navigation mark at Point Turner at the end of Banksia Peninsula.
