For the second time this year the Moon passed in front of Saturn for observers in Australia and New Zealand. First event in February was obscured by daylight and clouds and the weather forecast for May 14th was quite depressing too. But weather was merciful with only thin clouds passing by and two telescopes were working fine, despite a minor technical disaster a night before. A pair of binoculars provided nice views but what I saw on the back of the camera screen was even better! This video includes footage from two different telescopes tracking the Moon, which appears fixed but in reality it is the Moon that passes in front of Saturn. The sound is of Saturn's radio emissions recorded by Cassini spacecraft in April 2002, when it was 374 million kilometers (234 million miles) from the planet and mapped into audio frequencies (click on the link form more info at NASA: http://tiny.cc/nm33fx). * Full disk of the Moon with 1-metre long telescope and Sony NEX5-N in time-lapse mode, 50x real speed * Close-up of Saturn with 2-metre long telescope (hand crafted by Peter Read from SDM Telescopees) and Canon 6D with Magic Lantern and RAW video 5x crop mode, 8x real speed

Evocative, atmospheric impressions of moonlight filtering through a streaming mass of cloud, illuminating the ocean. Transitioning to Cradle Mountain, Tasmania, the southern stars reflect in a mirror calm Dove Lake, whilst a faint aurora (Southern Lights) appears fleetingly behind Cradle Mountain. Features a soundtrack from Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars (reproduced by permission). This timelapse sequence was created by John Goldsmith and entered in the Astrophotography Competition at Astofest 2014, in Perth, Western Australia (www.icrar.org/astrofest). It was awarded the prize for 'Best Timelapse' by judges Dr David Malin, Professor Peter Quinn and Professor Andreas Wicenec. This is one of my seven submissions to the "One Day on Earth" 11.11.11 project. This is the nearly full moon at about 3:00 a.m. on 11.11.11 as seen from Richmond, California, USA. There was an incoming storm brewing as indicated by the clouds passing over the moon's face. This is a silent version of the shot. This was shot with a Sony palm size camcorder (HDR-CX500v) on a tripod on my deck. This clip was trimmed, slightly sharpened, desaturated to reduce atmospherics, then sped up 4 times with slight adjustments to the brightness and contrast in post production (Sony Vegas Pro 10). Shot and edited by Phil Loarie for “One Day on Earth 11.11.11”.
