    • My Talk at the DRAA

      from Brad Goodspeed Added 736 10 0

On June 13th, 2012, I gave a talk at the Durham Regional Astronomical Association. The primary focus of the talk was my effort to help save the James Webb Space Telescope, a project which was in a very serious funding crisis until November of last year. My short film 'Vision' won the SaveJWST video competition, and hopefully made some small difference in getting the Webb's funding back on track. As a prize I was awarded an hour's worth of observing time on the 2-meter Faulkes Telescope. During the talk I also highlighted some of the astronomy-based content from my blog that has generated buzz, talked about the importance of skeptical activism, and tried to illustrate the power of using art to promote science.

      • Sunspot Evolution Observatory - Noaa 1460

        from Backyard Astronomy Added

To understand how much a sunspot can change during its life I think that the only solution is to see it. So I decided to produce short movies of the biggest sunspots that i will see during my sun sessions. Each submit will follow the evolution in a range of 6-10 days using up to 1000 images captured with time lapse of 10 minutes. As promised here is the first animation with multiple wavelight time-lapse. This one show the dynamics of the Sun's atmosphere over 7 days as seen by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), following the active region NOAA 1460 in the month of April 2012, in three different wavelight to follow the birth of the sunspost. If you would like to see a particular big and beautifull sunspot evolution, let me know the NOAA code and date, i will try to make it. :) Movie produced by Paolo Porcellana. Data courtesy of NASA/SDO and the AIA, EVE, and HMI science teams. If you need the animations for didactic/informative purpose, let me know, I could give a better version

Last June 5th 2012 we travelled to Norway and Sweden in order to observe the Venus transit. Weather was quite bad, but we managed to find a free of clouds place. Here we present a short video with some of the photos that we took. More info at http://laazotea.org

In this talk Professor Quinn describes the international mega-science project to build the worlds biggest radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array. Now that Australia and Southern Africa have been chosen by the SKA Project Office in Manchester to host different parts of this enormous telescope, the project is about to enter the final stages of design and construction. The first half of this video is a presentation followed by an in-depth question and answer session between Professor Quinn and the audience. This event was hosted by Horizon - the Planetarium at Scitech in Perth Western Australia on June 7th, 2012.
