This movie was shot the night of November 25, 2010 with a Sony Alpha A55 and a 4-inch Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope. See the detail and incredible contrast, sharperness and high resolution of the footage? Believe it or not, this was shot from my backyard.

I made a little film to mark today's (6 June 2012) Transit of Venus - the celestial occurrence whereby Venus aligns with the Earth and the Sun, and will not be witnessed again until 2117. All these images were captured by the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft, which is orbiting above us at 36,000km. This is just a space-fan film - I claim no ownership of the copyrighted materials contained herein. NOTE: For an update on the aftermath of this video, check out my talk at the Durham Regional Astronomical Association. http://vimeo.com/44219324 U.S. Congress is considering the cancellation of Hubble's successor. It's a telescope that would be capable of seeing almost all the way back to the big bang; abandoning it would be a tragic loss to science. This is a very short film asking them to reconsider.
