    • UARS Satellite Re-entry Timelapse

      00:50

      from RASC Victoria Centre Added

Sept 23, 2011 8:36PM to 9:54PM PST Members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in Victoria, BC, Canada tried to observe a NASA satellite re-entering the Earth's atmosphere and falling to the ground. We observed from our observatory atop Observatory Hill, near Victoria, BC, Canada. As it turns out, we didn't spot the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), however we had fun trying! If the satellite had re-entered in our area, it was expected to track across this scene from right to left near the treeline. http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2011/sep/HQ_11-350_UARS_Re-entry.html This timelapse video was shot on the off chance the falling satellite would be visible in our skies. There are lots of interesting objects streaking through this video to keep the viewer entertained for the 22 second duration, which represents 1 hour and 18 minutes of elapsed time during the time slot the satellite was predicted to be traveling in our area (Victoria, BC, Canada). The video is shot facing south using a 10mm fisheye lens attached to a Canon T2i dSLR camera, showing a 180° view (diagonally). The consellation Cygnus the Swan appears near the top edge of the frame, with the North American Nebula clearly visible near the bright star Deneb. The Summer Triangle dominates the centre of the frame, formed by the three bright stars Deneb, Vega and Altair. The Milky Way cuts a wide swath diagonally across the frame. As the final editing is being done for the 10/01/2011 Blu Ray release of "Carina", some scenes must be cut, even the IMHO good ones. Here is what I was thinking for this scene... It's sometime in the future. You saved up for the popular Hubble Heritage Cruise of the Carina Nebula. You paid extra for the Narrow Bandwidth View Windows and now you watch as some famous landmarks go by. There's the Lost Space Man to the left...then you see the Exited Hatchet Fish with fry swimming along behind, Rhino Moose, and Cerberus all in one view. A close flyby of the Chrysalis takes you to the rest stop at the Bok Globule Resort - it's 5 star! Image Credit: NASA, ESA, N.
