Disney Infinity for Reluctant Learners in STEAM (Submission / feature video for SXSW Edu 2016 Playground Hands On session.) Engaged students may already be coding, but how do we reach reluctant learners? The Connected Youth project at the Austin Public Library has been trying one way that may surprise you: Disney Infinity. Through characters and avatars they already know and love, at-risk youth are sneaking up on STEAM. Game design, decision-making, worldbuilding, logic, storytelling, collaboration, experimentation, innovation, exploration: all become possible through the virtual worlds of Disney Infinity. Not just for libraries (and not just for home), this popular platform for virtual reality may yet surprise us all. Come try and see why. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step.” –Lao Tzu - Familiarize yourself with Disney Infinity: How it works, why it engages, what it can and cannot do. - Collaborate on worldbuilding, co-creating a virtual space or terrain with ease in the Toy Box. Minecraft does it differently, with pros and cons. - Explore the basic tutorial for level building and game design in the Toybox, and see how Templates open the door to much more.
