• Towards a framework for the design of mixed reality immersive education spaces

Jennifer B. ELLIOTT, University of Cincinnati, USA, Michael GARDNER, and Malek ALRASHIDIB, University of Essex, UK. Immersive Education is moving beyond just the use of virtual worlds to become more embedded into the physical world around us. Some attempts have been made to characterize this mixed reality space along a virtuality continuum, with a particular focus on the interface between real and virtual worlds and the emergence of inter-reality applications where virtual reality systems are coupled with real-world objects. Some researchers have proposed frameworks that aim to understand the affordances of 3-dimensional (3D) virtual environments. However, there is little support for practitioners and designers in creating mixed-reality education spaces. This paper attempts to address this issue by using an Augmented Reality learning scenario as the initial basis for the creation of an initial design framework that aims to characterize the learning benefits (or affordances) of this technology. This is then used to identify the technical challenges which underpin mixed-reality learning spaces, and where possible, supporting pedagogical frameworks, which can be used to guide the design process. Finally we suggest the future steps necessary to move this work forward, from an initial outline framework, with the intention of developing a practical tool to help practitioners and researchers make informed choices in this emerging field. europe.immersiveeducation.org/events/ied-europe-summit-2012/

Exhibited at the Siggraph 2012 Botanicus Interacticus communicates a new capacitive sensing technology called Touché invented by Ivan Poupyrev / Disney Research in collaboration with Jonas Loh / Studio NAND, Philipp Schoessler and Munehiko Sato. By using a visual illusion achieved by placing a two-way mirror in front of the display, interactive and generative graphics augment living plants and dynamically change in response to the user interaction with a living plant. The custom software enables to set specific anchor points on splines matching the shape of the plant. The particles move from this spline creating an aurora like impression. A range of real and artificial plants such as bamboo, orchid, cactus and snake plant were explored, where each plant presented its unique interactive and visual character. The exhibition was developed in collaboration with TheGreenEyl & Christian Riekoff – www.botanicus-interacticus.com www.disneyresearch.com www.nand.io www.thegreeneyl.com www.riekoff.com

by Lily & Honglei, John Craig Freeman The augmentation is inspired by the crystal coffin displayed in Mausoleum of Mao Zedong on Tiananmen Square since 1977, a year after Mao’s death. In the twenty first century, while China has been transforming itself into a modern society in many ways and gaining more influences economically and politically around the globe, Mao’s crystal coffin, the immortal-looking shell, remains exist as a symbol of authoritarian ruling system. During spring 2011, a crackdown on dissent – including detaining many intellectuals and members of religious group – followed by distinct signs of revival of Maoist policies, has left people baffled about the future direction of China. We therefore use Crystal Coffin of Mao as main body of the virtual China Pavilion, which is topped with a tower and roof with ancient Chinese looking, as regulated by Ministry of Construction of China: architectural ‘designs must reflect traditional Chinese building styles.

ENGLISH The conceptual platform for Thing Search is for an augmented reality application which interfaces mixed reality with the web of things. It's a search engine for real things; it could find your lost phone in the fridge, support you finding the right book at the library while gathering information about other semantically linked books and accesing them. Thing Search is a scalable search engine which puts the user in control of what should be found and what remains hidden. From your home to the wider worlds Thing Search has a mirriad of applications.

                      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
