On the first of March 2015, Aurora predictions were high, and the sky conditions were looking good. Myself and Layton Findlater headed out in pursuit of another capture. Although the moon was extremely bright (more than we like) it did light up the foreground for us better than we could have done ourselves. The downside of this is that it washes out the colour and the intensity of the Aurora. We had a great night all round, and not disappointed at all :-)

Brightly moonlit aurora australis, 2 March 2015. Look out for the nosy ponies, the 'thing' crawling over the shed, and picket fence rays over the shed towards the end of the sequence. Soundtrack: Megan Washington ' Meet me in the middle of the air'

The indicators were looking good for an Aurora to appear, and as I had been missing my Aurora fix due to weather (clouds & rain) over the past few weeks, so I headed out as the shadows were deepening to set up and photograph my first for a while. The Aurora gods didn't disappoint.

The Sun may be flare-quiet but it launched two major solar storms this week. One of these storms was the eruption of the huge snake-like filament that stretched across the Sun last week. Although neither big storm is Earth-directed, we have felt some effects from some wispy solar storms and fast solar wind and it looks like more is on the way. See details of the two big solar storm eruptions, the elevated radiation levels we have seen at Earth, catch up on some gorgeous aurora shows from the brief storm periods we've had this week, and see what else our Sun has in store. I shot this timelapse from Lowburn Harbour, on February 23rd. The Aurora Australis was highly active and the Milky Way looked great!

This was another Aurora which had not been predicted. I was watching the gauges and felt there was a strong chance of something coming so headed out to Howden. My decision was vindicated and up popped the beams, but unfortunately it was short lived as it was totally blocked by clouds. This time lapse covers the period 11:20pm on 26th January until a little after 1:30am the following morning.

Heard reports than there was an Aurora Australis show happening so I popped the camera out on the kitchen window sill before I went to bed. No shortage of light pollution but that's what you get when capturing an Aurora in suburbia. Music: Requiem for Twitter by Lee Rosevere (http://members.shaw.ca/happypuppyrecords/index.html)
