So, the last few nights I have been going out and taking time lapses of the Milky Way. Last night I took a 30 second exposure at five second intervals for four hours. I noticed some red appearing in some of them but didn't put much thought into it, I just thought it was strange because it had never shown up in photos I had taken from that spot in the past. It wasn't until i reviewed the photos on my laptop that I noticed the light was moving in the same way the Aurora Borealis did when I lived in Northern Canada. It is nearly impossible to see the aurora from this latitude. It wasn't until I checked the space weather report that I saw that the strongest geomagnetic storm of this 11 year solar cycle hit last night and I happened to be photographing it happening next to Uluru!! Check out the time lapse below of possibly the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, the Aurora Australis next to the Milky Way and Uluru!

Francois Fourie has a passion for photography, particularly for taking images at night of star filled skies. When he accidentally captured the green glow of an Aurora Australis, it sent him on the chase for a new photographic passion. Fortunately for Francois, Tasmania happens to be one of the best places in Australia to see an Aurora Australis, for both regularity and intensity. Yet taking a good photograph or film clip of an Aurora isn’t necessarily an easy task. It requires a mix of camera skills, a bit of luck with time and weather, a happiness to be out and about at all hours of the night and a lot of patience. Recently I joined Francois on the Aurora chase where all the required elements came together and we were able to see an Aurora and collect some timelapse images. Produced by Troy Melville.

***Updated from 540 to 1080p on 3/22/2011*** A set of around 200 three second exposures displaying the awesome movement of Auroras. I took these pictures at the South Pole, Antarctica of the Atmospheric Research Observatory and then switched the camera 90 degrees toward the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station where an amazing aurora built on June 23, 2009.

Aurora Australis as seen from Tinderbox, Tasmania, Australia on the 15th of July 2012. Unfortunately the cloud came over just as it was at the peak of it's display. The cloud cleared later on in the evening, but it was no where near as spectacular.
