Here is a video of a new piece I made for the Kinetica Art Fair. I had always wanted to make a piece that contained a pinwheel gear made from wood and metal. These gears are the kind you would find on an old windmill. They seem pretty simple but are tough to get right. Starting with the tin can base and half an idea I first needed to make a set of working gears. I used Adobe Illustrator to generate my own templates. Transferred them to wood disks that I cut with a hole saw. I made the mechanism first and then settled on a narrative. Near the end of my process it was almost an afterthought to use the used coffee filter as the dress for her. There is an instructional aspect to this video for other makers who may want to attempt something like this.

This last weekend I had the pleasure of exhibiting in the 2014 Kinetica Art Fair. Most importantly I shared the venue with some other artists and makers who I really admire and respect. Tim Lewis is a sculptor that makes amazing machines. Some are electronic and others are quite mechanical. All of them are amazing. I did a brief interview with him early on in the fair. Meet Tim Lewis: Automatist.

This simulation is a combination of John Conways Game of Life and Craig Reynolds Boids Flocking behavior. I wanted to combine ideas from these two complex adaptive systems to see what behaviors and forms emerged from a more fluid cellular automation. The Program is built with Processing and would not of been possible without Daniel Shiffmans book The Nature Of Code. Each dot is has three rules to follow ‘separation’, ‘cohesion’ and ‘cell growth’. Each rule is an action that happens in reaction to the cells surroundings. Separation and Cohesion are movement rules and will output a vector to move. Cell growth controls the evolution, life and death of the cells. All of the rules use the surrounding cells to calculate what action to perform next. The colour depicts the changing parameters of the cohesion rule. Each time a dot splits it will 'mutate' and change its behaviour. I was interested to see how different behaviors interacted with each other. Music: Ólafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm, Stare, a2 purchase it here http://www.erasedtapes.com/store/index/ERATP042

All he wanted was someone to love. All she wanted was to escape the endless city. And the robot? She was programmed to make him happy. No matter what. Note: laptop/phone speakers won't reproduce all of the audio. Nice speakers or headphones recommended.
