    • Automated Pin Forming and Insertion System - III

from Horizon Complex Metal Stampings Added 11 0 0

Horizon, a Midwest-based, high-volume precision metal stamping supplier servicing the automotive, electronics, telecommunication, consumer, defense and appliance industries, was presented with an exciting opportunity for involvement with an Automotive Rear Camera Assembly Application. It was this Tier 1 Suppliers desire to engage with Horizon since we were one of only a few companies located in North America that had the capability to provide the stamped Bandolier Pins required for this assembly as well as the Automation required for forming and insertion of the pins into a pre-molded housing. The approach we took was a bit different than the concept originally presented to us. The assembly consisted of six 0.64 diameter pins (2 rows of 3). To facilitate ease of loading and insertion, Horizon redesigned the Bandolier Pin Strip into groups of 3. Keeping the Pins on a Bandolier Strip allowed for quality checks utilizing Horizons’ In-Line Vision that is used on all Reel to Reel Stamping Applications. In addition, providing Bandolier Pins to the plater allowed for the Pins to be selectively gold plated. Things get interesting after the Pins return from plating as volume requirements dictated that 2 housings be populated during each “frantic paced cycle”. Two sets of strips/pins (long and short) are payed off and fed through to the “pin removal station”. High speed miniature grippers grab hold of the pins and place them in the four (4) forming stations thereby forming twelve (12) pins. After the pins are formed, a pick and place devise with grippers transports the pins into the “pin insertion station” where the plastic molded housings are bowl fed into position. Once in position, the formed pins are inserted into the plastic. Upon completion, the fully populated assemblies go through a vision check to ensure the presence of formed pins. Upon verification, assemblies are placed on an evacuation slide and indexed to a secondary Insert Molding Application where over-molding of this assembly completes the process. LINDO Smart, is a 3 wheeled, electric vehicle concept, that is based on the Piaggio, Tuk Tuk (Vespa Ape) vehicle. When designing LINDO, I wanted to be able to create a vehicle that would ultimately change the transport system that is currently implemented in the Melbourne CBD. Melbourne, being one of the largest and most congested cities in Australia, provides its community with a very fixed and linear transport system. I wanted to refine a mode of transport rather than to confine its users by making the system inaccessible and difficult to use.
