Originally created for the Darklight Festival's '4 Day Movie' project, Avatar Days is a portrait of four online gamers in Dublin whose daily lives contrast with their virtual identities. Advanced 3D technologies and Motion Capture animation were used to insert the players' in-game characters in place of their real selves against the backdrop of the banal urban landscape which they inhabit.

This is short film directed by Gavin Kelly ( http://www.piranhabar.ie ) I worked on a while ago called "Avatar Days". What makes this one special is the fact that it was filmed, vfx'ed and comped all in just 4 days. It was made as part of the "4 day Film" catagory in the Darklight Film Festival. It follows 4 MMORPG players taking about their online persona's. As they tell their stories we see them go about their everyday lives against the mundane backdrop of city life...but as their Avatars. There was a team of people on this with director Gavin Kelly leading the troupe. I worked on the 3d characters along with John O' Connell and Will Sharkey. John O' Connell was 3D Lead. View the full documentary on Aeon Video: aeon.co/video/culture/avatar-days-a-short-film-about-online-role-playing/ Many consider video games as mere escapism, but for a dedicated group of online role-playing gamers, virtual reality can merge with daily life in surprising and enlightening ways. As these gamers walk to work, or wait on line at the supermarket, they carry with them the fantastical creatures and mythological worlds of their video-game lives. In Avatar Days, this blending of worlds is made literal: using advanced 3D technologies and motion-capture animation, the film brings players’ in-game characters to life. Armoured giants sit hunched over computers in sparsely furnished offices; a scantily clad elf operates a crane at a construction site; a few blocks away, a wizard waits for a train. A glimpse into the rich interior lives of everyday people, the film illuminates the power of imagination to transform the mundane.
