The era we are living could be easily described as the "being hipster" one. Considering how Wes Anderson's movies, indie music and vintage (sometimes non-sense) ingredients became emblematic for this generation, the explanation of the phenomenon is not so hard to reach: what used to be part of a niche culture peacefully invaded every environment insomuch as skinny jeans, lumberjacks shirts and huge beards are now pop elements similarly to long hair and Chelsea boots during the Beatlemania. This is where the paper-thin boundary line breaks and trends and subcultures meet. Ground's Oranges reinterprets - in a intentionally lo-fi/homemade way - the Hipster universe magnifying its virtues and vices but also taking its styles and thematics to an extreme level, getting them close to something similar to a parody that, actually, is just pure and sincere celebration. This is a Fusion entry my brother Christian and I put together for this years APPA (Australian Professional Photographer Awards). We had been talking about collaborating on a Fusion project together for a while and quite literally left it to the last minute to put something together. We shot the images one night and edited the end result the next day to make that nights mail as the entry had to be in Sydney three days later. To say it went down to the wire was an understatement. The Fusion category required a photographer to combine his still images into a (2 minute only) presentation incorporating moving footage be it real time, timelapse, or stop motion. The photographer could employ the services of a third party (me) to edit the end result. There was a requirement for the presentation to include at least 20% of still imagery or 20% of moving imagery. It was pretty hard to come up with something that only goes for 2 minutes and my normal slow pace filming wasn't an option. Anyway I got a Silver for it which was 80 out of a possible 100. Not bad considering how quickly it was thrown together. Next year Christian and I will give ourselves a bit more time and hopefully push for a gold..... Hope you like it. **I have just found out it was judged the WINNER of the FUSION category so how about that. I'm blown away...** The music is from the track "Safety in Numbness" heavily cut down as it goes for over eight minutes. It is a collaboration between the band " Sonver" http://www.sonver.co.uk/ and Belgian band "Elephant Leaf" http://www.myspace.com/elephantleaf Lead singer Lucie Dehli does an amazing job on this track but unfortunately you only hear a short distant hint of her hauntingly beautiful voice. (Sorry Lucie) Sadly "Sonver" have split up and two of the talented members have gone onto solo projects. It's always a good day at the office when your job is to create something for someone, that's entirely yours in concept, design, and execution. For this year's Greek Design and Illustration Awards (EBGE), we volunteered to produce the intro video for the Promotion category, which includes awards for Best Poster, Best Print Ad, Best Invitation, Best Cultural Event Program and Best Flyer (shown in this exact order in the video). We never really experimented with abstract design in the past, at least not as much as we'd like to, so we figured this would be a good opportunity to do so. After a lot (and we mean, a lot) of playing around with shapes, materials, -our patience- and the overall look of the video, we came up with something that's loosely described as a series of breathing, conceptual projections of each award in its most primitive form, sometimes more abstract, sometimes more literal, but hardly ever random. The Lemon Tree is a short experimental narrative. It addresses our constant hunt for perfection. The closer we think we are the more distorted our memory of it becomes.
