We got a bit of everything this trip. Some flat days, some small days, and some all time days. This was filmed on some of the smaller days, but we still ended up with some cool shots. This year in Baja we were lucky enough to have Bennet William there to film us on his waverunner. He filmed everything by himself with his gopro, so a huge thanks to him. Song: Lights Out ft. Bernd Roediger steels the show at the JP Aloha Classic Staff and competitors arrived at the beach and were stoked to see bigger than expected surf already showing signs of texture. The stage was set and it was going to be a killer day! The call was made by Head Judge Duncan Coombs early that we would continue with the Pro bracket, and take advantage of the better than expected conditions. As we moved into Round #3, the heats got tighter and tighter. Riders threw caution out the window, and pushed their limits to secure a spot in the coveted PWA. Powerful riding by Laurent in Round #3, he went on to win his heat in Round #4 following an impressive display which included a Taka and a 360 The wind in the early heats was light, so Duncan quickly increased the heat duration to 16 minutes from 14. This ensured that riders could risk it all, knowing that they had plenty of time to catch waves. From a rider’s perspective this is great. You gain so much confidence in the knowledge that it is not do or die on every wave. This really helps to encourage progression, which is central to the AWT philosophy. Round #4 produced some amazing action as the scores started to increase. In Heat #33 Laurent Guillemin linked powerful turns with a Taka and a 360 to win the heat ahead of Matt Pritchard. Heat #34 was won by the riding of Quatro teammates Bernd Roediger, and his shaper Keith Teboul, who’s vertical turns in the pocket demonstrate his surfing prowess. In Heat #35 there was little that Jake Miller and Casey Hauser could do to slow the progress of the top two ranked AWT riders, Kevin Pritchard and Camile Juban. The stand out performances of the round came in Heat #36 with both Levi and Graham turning up the heat. Graham went big nailing a Taka, a Goiter and a 360 while Levi wracked up a huge tally with incredibly snappy turns and tweaked airs. Graham mid-Taka Another powerful slash from Levi! IIn the first semi-final Bernd and Keith continued to dominate with their fluid riding styles. The second semi saw Ezzy go big, but he couldn’t make his moves stick finishing 4th. He, like many others has booked himself a place in the PWA bracket. I am confident that there is more left in the tank, especially when the waves build in size and power. Kevin, still recovering from illness sailed hard with a big one handed aerial to start the heat, and later landed a clean 360. The fluid style and new school antics of Camile, and powerful turns and tweaked airs of Levi, saw them both advance to the final. Luckily we will be seeing more of KP in the days ahead as he was awarded a PWA Wild Card last week. The 20 minute 4 man Final With the final now extended to 20 minutes, riders would have more time to impress. As four riders entered the water, it was clear that we were about to see something special. The only question really was which one of the riders would move into another gear, and fight hardest for the win. Bernd showed no nerves as he lined up his first wave at Middles. He busted a huge air, which he backed up with solid vertical turns. On his next wave he linked powerful and skatey turns with a taka to finish. With just two waves down, it was clear that Bernd would be hard to beat. Camile was not quite finding the set waves or landing his moves cleanly, but still managed to have one wave with three aerials which scored big! Fighting from behind, Levi progressively closed in on Bernd. Thanks to a perfectly executed 360, and some aggressive rides he was close, but was ultimately one more big one short. It was the 17 yr old Bernd Roediger who took his second successful AWT event victory and second AWT Maui title. Just think, how good he will be in another year’s time!

A special day for both Levi Siver and Marcilio ‘Brawzinho’ Browne The ninth day of the JP Aloha Classic - presented by Nalu Kai - was a day of firsts for two sailors, and one that neither of them will ever forget. Levi Siver (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) successfully defended his single elimination crown against the AWT champion Bernd Roediger (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) to claim his first ever win on the PWA World Tour. The prestigious JP Aloha Classic. Whilst Marcilio ‘Brawzinho’ Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) held his nerve in the title showdown against Alex Mussolini (Tabou / Gaastra) to deservedly be crowned the 2013 PWA Wave World Champion. The Brazilian’s first, of possibly many, wave world titles. After a stormy and slightly moody start to the day, which saw showers and heavy cloud cover, the action finally began at 12:15pm, as the synonymous Maui sunshine burned through, however there were still a number of squalls. The variable winds and mast high sets made for tricky conditions, resulting in a few masts and sails being sacrificed to the infamous reef and rocks of Ho’okipa. Double Elimination Title Decider The title decider saw two men - Marcilio Browne and Alex Mussolini - competing in a four-man heat against Josh Angulo (Angulo / Gun Sails) and Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins) for the 2013 PWA Wave World Championship. The heat was one of the most eagerly anticipated and high-pressured heats for a number of years, with both Browne and Mussolini looking to claim their maiden PWA Wave World titles. After an intense twenty-two minutes it was soon revealed that Browne had advanced, whilst crucially Mussolini, agonizingly missed out in third place as the two-time PWA Wave World Champion, Angulo, also advanced. Browne produced one terrific wave consisting of a powerful, vertical turn, straight into an incredible air taka and one more gouging hack to write his name in windsurfing history! The tension on the beach, as the result was revealed was palpable, Browne was soon overcome by a sense of disbelief and euphoria at the same time, whilst Mussolini saw his title dreams come to an end. However, Mussolini, can still hold his head high after achieving his best finish to date on the PWA World Tour - second - and he’ll be back stronger than ever for 2014. Marcilio ‘Brawzinho’ Browne speaks after capturing his maiden PWA Wave World Championship: “It’s my childhood dream, it’s what I’ve been working towards for my whole life and it’s finally come true, it’s unbelievable. It’s been a long week and as much as you try to think about it, it’s always there in the back of your mind, and now that it’s actually over and it’s done, it’s not a load off my back but I can relax. The last few days have been very tense for me.” “The first wave I went down in the first heat my legs were shaking, I’m not gonna lie, I’m just happy it worked out, had faith and got the job done.” Bernd Roediger produced one of the performances of the day in the battle for second and third against Kauli Seadi (JP / Hot Sails Maui / MFC). The AWT Champion landed the move of the day as he rotated through an amazing taka right in the critical section of the wave, which was received with rapturous applause on the beach. Seadi combined showcased his unique flowing style, but it wasn’t enough against an on fire Roediger, who set up a finale against Levi Siver.

What a phenomenal 5 days of contest here at the AWT final tour stop at Ho'okipa Maui! Everyone was in agreement that there hadn't been a competition like it at Ho'okipa for a very long time. The biggest names in windsurfing from back in the day put up a fierce fight and an epic show against some of the top new names in the sport. With 120 entrants, from 24 countries, 60 amateur competitors, 20 female sailors and a who's who in the Professional division, this event was destined from the outset to be a very, very special few days. Combining the incredible entry list with some all-time Ho'okipa conditions with waves in the 12-15 foot region, spectators and competitors alike were treated to a spectacle that I don't think any of us will be forgetting anytime soon!

Graham Ezzy wins the Cactus Cup With four single eliminations in the bag it was decided that contest conditions were not quite up to par to run a fifth giving Graham Ezzy the title. There was still wind and waves on the final day but unless you brought your 3.7 and were prepared to wait for the proper set to arrive it just wasn’t fair for everyone. It was a great call by head judge Matt Pritchard. So instead Pritchard send heats out for an Expression Session to battle for a Chinook Carbon boom. The competition was intense and the Expert final saw Kevin Pritchard, Graham Ezzy, Nathan Mershon, Russ Faurot and Royn Bartholdi all head out to the far side of the island to throw their biggest jumps. In a surprise finish Faurot dominated the heat landing countless Back Loops, Push Loops and a huge Stalled Forward. Yossi Salomon took the Amateur title and Miho took the women’s crown with impressive loops in the tough conditions. Filmed by Kevin Pritchard, Ben Dann, Ruben Lemmens
